Subject: Race Day: What goes in the water bottle?

I have my first tri next week, and I have equiped my bike with an Aerobottle (2 chambers).

Question:  Do I just put in water or do I do one water and one sport drink?

My considerations:  I am already clever enough to not to drink so much I need to pee.  It is a sprint, but for me, I will be on my bike for about 1.5 hours.  I still have a 30-35 minute run ahead of me at that time, so should I have something a with a few calories in one of the chambers?

Beer in one, whiskey in the other.

Water is for the weak.

Whatever you used successfully in training. Race day isn't the time to be changing stuff up...

I typically only put water in the aerobottles because it's too messy with sports drink if it splashes out.

For a sprint, I usually take one bottle of Nuun on the bike.  Wouldn't have a chance to drink more than that on the bike.

You said it's a sprint, but you're going to be on your bike for 90 minutes? That's only 9 miles an hour, roughly, if you figure an average 13 mile sprint bike course. You're faster than that in your logs. Is it a long bike leg or an especially difficult course?

I looked back at my pace graph.  I was thinking I averaged around 20 kph, that is where the 90 minutes came from (30K bike leg).  Lately the average pace has actually been between 22 and 25 kph.  So it isn't 90 minutes, but is is still over an hour for 30 K.

I could push it, but the run is the hardest part for me, so I want a little left in the tank.

I personally would go with gels for a sprint washed down with water, it's a little faster and easier to suit a less dire energy need.

x2 on the advice to stick with what has worked in training an DO NOT try something new on race day.

The first time I ever tried Accelerade was at a race and I chugged some on the bike. Besides the fact that it was the most vile-tasting crap I've ever had past my lips, I cramped up and had to walk-run the 5k.

I like to use gels and Power Quencher, which is an electrolyte-only sports drink; no carbs or calories and tastes better than the Gatorade-type drinks. I'm an extremely heavy sweater so it's great for me. Also, because it has no sugars, it doesn't make the bike all sticky when it sloshes or drips.

Try this in one of your water bottles. Hammer Endurolytes in powder form it is tasteless and works great.http://www.all3sports.com/product_info.php?pName=hammer-endurolytes-powder&jsenabled=1&osCsid=3ea1492a005b109ded09d91b35d93e46

For a sprint?  There's no need.

Put water in your water bottle.  You have plenty of blood glucose and stored glycogen to get through a sprint.  If you don't buy that idea, put whatever sports drink you want in it.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

I think I'll just go with water.

Isn't that product an electrolyte replacement only? I don't think it has any carbs/sugars in it. Even for a sprint I take in lytes because of my sweat rate.

You could sweat gallons, and that wouldn't be an issue in a sprint.  Replace them when the race is over if you're worried about it.  Putting extra stuff in your stomach when you're red-lining it just doesn't seem prudent.
