My husband knows someone who has one.  He really liked it and thought it did a good job of looking like text.

You can back everything up onto your PC.

As far as being a multimedia device, I'm not sure how well it would work out.  The screen isn't an LED or LCD like and iPod or Palm - it's actually ink being moved electronically.  It's not back lit at all.  Not sure how that would work for displaying lots of other things.

I have been thinking about purchasing it as well, considering I have 700+ novels sitting around my apartment and 1-3 more get added weekly.

I would also be very interested to hear some reviews of the product...

I have used one, they are pretty cool. One thing I don't like, the price. I mean how many books can you buy for the price you pay for this thing. This coming from a gadget freak. But it is easy to read and use.

My dad has one.

I like it, not love it.

Hard to replace the 'feel' of a book, but that is because we were raised with books.

I think it is a slam-dunk winner for school childer, when (if) they get textbooks on it.  So dumb for kids to carry around 6 huge textbooks when you can have it all in one device.

I want one, too.  I'm with you, Lara, I'm afraid I would fill the memory fast.  But you can insert a card to expand the memory and everything you buy is backed up by Amazon.  I will probably wait a little longer to see if the price drops.

I've been using the Kindle since February.  Received it as a Xmas gift.  So far, I'd have to give it overall a thumbs up.

I love to read and travel alot for work.  The Kindle makes my life so much easier than packing multiple books.  As a bonus, it automatically downloads many of my favorite periodicals; SF Chronicle (daily), Wall Street Journal (daily), Fortune (weekly), Forbes (weekly), and Reader's Digest (weekly).  There are many more available too.

I also have loaded up a ton of triathlon information (All of Dan's old ST Articles, training stuff from the web, etc.) in .PDF format.

Pros:
- Small and lightweight, decent form factor
- Free wireless delivery of books, magazines, and newspapers from anywhere the Sprint data-network is available
- .DOC & .PDF importability
- Good battery life (esp. if you turn off the wireless)
- Great legibility and easier on the eyes than backlit computer screen
- Nice extras; built in MP3-player (random play only) and primitive web browser (for emergencies)

Cons:
- Good, but not great, book selection (many mainstream titles, but couldn't find any of Anthony Bourdain's books, or Dean Karnaze's book for instance)
- Expensive.  $399 is a bit much I think, considering the Sony PRS-505 (e-reader is more stylish/less selection/no wireless) costs less
- AC charger is poorly designed, very easy to break the connector-pin (ask me how I know)
- Included device cover sucks...and requires a little customizing with velcro to be useful
