I'd hesitate to swim alone because I know I'm not the strongest swimmer around. That said, if I were going to, I'd probably invest in something like this: http://www.triaids.com/SwimSafe.htm

Not a bad idea. Here it is fully inflated.

ForrestGump - 2008-05-29 4:13 PM Yes I probably will be doing at lest some of my OWS's alone in the sea...
I was at the beach one time and someone told me that when training in the sea I should always bring a swim chum. Of course, that guy had a fin and a whole lot of teeth.

Yes, someone must be told of what you are going to do etc... or better still swim with someone else.  I'll be close to the coast and in a harbor: I'll let my partner know where I'm swimming and for how long etc and that if I don't phone her after x amount of time when I think I'll be finished then to calll or come and see where I am.  Just the same as when I go running or cycling alone.

Probably for a different thread, but I'm sure if you asked most runners or cyclist if they have any form of ID or name and address on them when out and about alone, then the answer is probably no...

Swimming alone in a pool, lake or ocean is a no-no. You SHOULD never swim alone, if something happens such as a cramp, swallow some water, get attacked by a shark, etc, you should have a trained Lifeguard supervising you.

That being said, I do a lot of OWS workouts alone in a lake. I try to tell someone where I am and how long I'll be but that's just so they can send a recovery crew if I don't show up for dinner. Even if you are swimming in a group of triathletes if you have trouble without a trained lifeguard in the mix there can be more that 1 person in trouble. If you have ever tried to rescue a distressed swimmer, it is not a pretty scene.

Kathy had a great idea by ordering a rescue can or rescue tube to drag behind. It offers a little drag for a better workout and will be available if she has trouble or someone in her group has trouble.

Swim when you can as safe as you can! Have a blast!

The idea of a dragging along a rescue tube/can is a good idea. I may invest in one.

Often at a popular Lake Michigan beach with lifeguards.  I wear a bright cap, leave my stuff next to the guardstand and let the guard(s) know what I'm up to.   There's a buoy-line keeping boats out of the swimming area.  It's 5-10ft deep there.  I just follow the bouys parallel to the shore.  Each length is about 500m.

The joke was based on this:

chum noun, verb, chummed, chum·ming.
–noun
-> cut or ground bait dumped into the water to attract fish to the area where one is fishing.
–verb (used without object)
-> to fish by attracting fish by dumping cut or ground bait into the water.

I always do my OWS by myself.   It's a small lake and there are usually some boaters out there.   Always wear a bright colored swim cap.

But I do think the majority of people should train with others for safety reasons.     Do as I say, not as I do.

Most often I do OWS alone, and often the only people around are the early morning fishermen. I drag a kick board on a tether "just in case", though I've never needed it (provides drag at least).

Speaking of fisherman,  every year they open up the trout (i guess that is what they are fising for)season and the lake is ringed with people with lines in the water, even where the little swim beach is.    I cringe when I make my first swim of the year, stepping on a lost hook......or getting snagged on some fishing line.

I OWS all the time and prefer it to the pool.  I tow one of these behind me when I swim in my cove:

... The inflatable body board, not the girl!  Tongue out

It's nice.  A boat ramp to get in and out and the "no wake" bouys measure out a near-perfect 1-mile swim lap.
