Subject: Clip On Aero Bars

I want to bolt on a pair of aero bars. But I dont know what kind I should get.

I have heard that some clip on bars have hinges that you can use to rotate the pads out of the way when climbing. That seems like a great option.

Any recomendations?

I have the Profile Design Air Strykes. Which are what you describe. They have springs under the pads so they pop up out of the way when you are not in the aero bars, so you have more handle bar to hang onto while you climb.

I like them a lot, but am sure I would like a lot of aerobars.

Cash, You have the same aero bars that I do. I really like mine. What type of stem do you have? How long is it? I am thinking about buying a shorter stem so I don't have to stretch so far forward while in the aero position.

I have the Forte T2 Aero bars, $40 from Performance, very nice, but I'm a little stretched out.
I would like to get a shorter stem as well, I'm running a 120, a 90 would be better.

I found found basically 3 different types.  The type that clip onto your regular road bike bars, the type that clip onto a pair of more aero/bull horn bars, then there are full on aero bars atht are one piece.  The first type would be your cheapest and yes, having them flip up is a nice option for climbing.  The second and third type do not need to flip up because the bars are generally wide enough and you wouldn't need them to flip up.

I think making this decision is tough.  You get what you pay for as far as quality of product and as far as benefits reaped from the aero position.  Improper fit and position can cause more problems then it does help.  But how much you want to invest is an individual thing.  IMO decide what you want to get out of having these and what it's worth to you then go from there.

As MikeP suggested - it depends on your bars/bike. I have a road bike, and added the Profile GT Jammers. They're shorter aero bars and don't really extend past the brake hoods, they're also specifically designed to work on a road bike. You can manipulate their length, arm pad angle, and rotate the bar ends to meet your comfort needs. Been very comfortable on these.

Along the same lines I am looking at the T2+ for a road bike. My LBS told me that I would need to switch out my seat post to a more forward position one for added comfort and less stress on the legs in aero. Any one agree or disagree with this?

profile designs sells adapters so you can turn any of their aerobars in to flip ups like the ones talked about earlier. The T2s are great as the Ironman(forgot name..) ones.

I borrowed some jammers from a friend (Profile Design) and it seems like my handlebars are too thick.  I can't attach them.  I must be doing something wrong.

Probably have larger handlebars 31.8 I think...

They probably sell adapters to allow them to fit the larger bars, I had to do that with my Syntace clip ons.

After I posted I went to their site and it says this for the Jammers

MULTI-FIT System™ fits 26.0mm & 31.8mm bars
