R'n'R Arizona Marathon - RunMarathon

View Member's Race Log
Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe, Arizona
United States
51F / 11C
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 48m 50s
Overall Rank = 6015/7365
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 479/508
Pre-race routine:

Rode shuttle bus from hotel, about eight miles, got there around 6 am. Walked Dylan (12-yo son) around to show him where his half-marathon corral was, walked around and visited, did the porta-potti, porta-potti, porta-potti routine.

Had short pre-start speeches by the CEO of PF Chang's and Senator John McCain. Curt Schilling was on the pre-race podium as well.
Event warmup:

Did a little stretching, then waited for the start.
Run
  • 5h 48m 50s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 13m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Walked the first 25 miles trying to maintain a 13- to 13 1/2-minute pace. Was so bored at Mile 25 that I jogged the rest of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Not get injured during training so I could run the whole way.
Post race
Warm down:

Eat, eat, eat anything I could get my hands on that wasn't a gel. Had four cups of chocolate milk (better than Endurox), several PB&J sandwiches. Would have walked to Chang's for Kung Pao Shrimp if I didn't have to wait for wifey.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury during training.

Event comments:

Good, well-organized race, typical Elite Racing event.

Was supposed to rain (same rain that flooded the LA area), but sunrise brought blue skies and near-perfect weather, got a little warm at the end.

Sorry to read that you weren't able to run this one John. Still, you walked it at a faster pace than I run my 5k's, so my hat's off to ya' Did you do this one with TnT?

Did you do this one with TnT?

Yes, I guess I should add something like that, 1,500 of us purple clads, raised like $3.25 million. My 15th TNT event.

Also, this was my 11th marathon in 10 states, so now I can join the Fifty States Marathon Club as a provisional member.

Sounds like such a fun race! Congrats on getting out there and doing something despite the injury! How did the jogging finish feel? Think you're getting better?

And a big fat WOW for all the money raised by all you TnT'ers! Way to go!

Actually, after walking for 5 1/2 hours plus, the jogging felt great, was almost a relief to use the muscles differently.I ran one/walked one this morning twice, so far so good. there is a very slight achiness down there but I can't figure out if it's the tendon, the ankle, or the mind.

Awesome! IMO, once you get to that point there isn't a problem as long as you don't blast ahead. I've never totally gotten rid of that last twinge. I've got my first Physical Therapy appt tomorrow, I'll let you know if it's worth a poo.

He "went" in 2:40, he does a run/walk kind of thing, doesn't particularly like to train, but does OK. This was his fourth half-mary.

Great job Bear!  Aren't the TNT event weekends just the greatest?!

Now what is with you not following the Penguin's advice....."Start slow, then taper off!"

I run slow to begin with, so good job on keeping (somewhat) sane on the walk for that long.

Bear, thanks for putting in the race report.  This will probably inspire many folks who get injured to show up anyway, if not to walk the course, then to cheer on the other competitors.  My hat is off to you for not appearing on the "DNS" list.
