For anyone who just sees the picture without reading the story, and to put a real name to this:

Alejandro Alvarez, 37, of Monterrey was killed.

Did I read that the drunk guy was claiming to be an American from Brownsville?

Shouldn't and won't matter if he is or is not... he's going to Mexican prison for a longass time. If he lives to trial, which in a case like this, I wouldn't be surprised to see this loser off himself and save everyone else the trouble.

I believe the story was wrong as to the victim Alejandro Alvarez' hometown...I think he is from Brownsville, at least according to the Brownsville media.  This is where I lived for 12 years up until late 2006.  Many of my friends were out there doing this ride, but I haven't heard from my main contact in the cycling club yet to determine if everyone is ok.

The guy who was driving was also from Brownsville, and was in Mexico partying; according to Brownsville sources, he has admitted to not only being drunk, but also to doing cocaine prior to this wreck.  Absolutely sick.

Here's a link to the story from the local station there in South Texas.  If you watch the video, it seems the guy really could care less what he did.  And yes, the cyclists were ready to kill him on the spot.

My thoughts:

1. My thoughts go out to those injured, and the families of those injured and killed.

2. I hope this a$$ gets what's coming to him

3. Are helmets that ineffective that they will fly off your head upon impact? Did anyone else spot that? Was the rider wearing it not cinched up, or are helmets that prone to failure? Scares me to death!

A thought about the pic...

We don't know, but if the cop was in front of the cyclists and escorting them, and I were that cop - I would have steered my car into the path of the drunk driver and taken him/myself out rather than let him plow into the racers.

... But that's just me.

My toughts as well. The police car defintely saw it coming. He is well across the yellow line.. Impossible to say what any of us would do in that situation. Instinct takes over at that point. It's clear the police car was in motion and there is a slight turn to the front wheels.. so he was avoiding the situation and possibly out of control.

Interesting that some photos being posted of this have the police car cropped out.

As sad as it is, that is one dramatic, and interesting picture.

Bigger, and with feeling. Useless escort!!

Actually, I think the escorting officer is guilty of negligence. His whole purpose of being there is to warn traffic and protect the cyclists. Had he taken the hit, the outcome would have been way different. However we just react as we have been trained to, his response was probably just reflexes. It's hard to tell your body to hit that car coming at you.

I wonder if the escort car didn't make the whole situation even worse.  He would have obstructed the cyclists' view of what was up ahead and if he swerved out of the way, they might not have had the time to react.

Horrible scene and I'm definitely thinking about everyone injured and the family of the man killed.  Drunk driving needs to be punished much more harshly than it is.  This was murder, not even manslaughter.

I know there's discussion on some of the news sites that the picture shouldn't have been shown because it's so graphic, but I hate to say it that the one good thing that might come of this is some car drivers will actually see the power of their vehicles when colliding with those of us on bikes.

Unfortunate that Mexico doesn't have the death penalty.  Hope this guy is behind bars for a long, long time.

Just watch the news link and the other link that they have said 5 people have died now?

Unfortunately the guy  has no recollection of what happened.  Hope they show him some pictures of the victims and their families.

Found this video of the aftermath.    http://news.sbs.com.au/worldnewsaustralia/mexico_cycle_race_ends_in_tragedy_548351

I assume life in a Mexican prison is worse than the death penalty.

I was shocked when I saw this photo earlier today...its a sobering reminder that we are very vulnerable on bikes no matter how many precautions we take. As for that helmet flying off, I don't think any helmet would stay on with that impact. If your shoes can be blown off by an impact, I can't imagine a helmet would stay on unless it was very tightly/uncomfortably cinched.

It's just a horrible situation. While the world will despise the driver (and rightfully so), I imagine his family just suffered a great loss too...he's dead to the world now including his wife, kids, and extended family.
