You must have superior control, man... if I tried that while exerting enough effort to pass someone I'd probably end up in the ER getting stitches.

Another from the PNW - I am usually in semi-road gear (chick with so-so bike, jersey or tri top, lycra shorts, MTB click shoes) so I am hard to pigeonhole.   I actually find that the roadies are friendly and the MTB people are snubbers. I do the couple fingers off the bars "wave" and/or the head nod/grin. It nearly always gets me a smile or a wave back. But not from the MTB folks. They can't see me.

Quick hijack: The other day I gave the "on your left" to a guy we'd been trying to catch, and he ended up joining us and rotating pulls. Fun! I always wonder if I should ask if they want to join us (hubby and I). We have been joined a few other times as well.

and I am THE COMPLETE opposite - Roadies have a 'tude!!! I am an ex-mtn bike racer (raced almost every weekend for five years) and have many friends who are  bot mtn bikers and "roadies"  (I am one now an ex mtn biker - turned roadie!!!)  all in all... MOST roadies seem to first look at your bike then you when you first meet....also at a race start...you are more apt to get elbowed over in a road race - but when racing mtn bikes we were all warning each other of deadly spots on the race course - bad ruts - hairy downhills..... My DH and I now ride our road bikes at least 3-4 times a week and whenever I pass anyone, I "almost" always say Passing -  and say hi and good job as passing to many. Very seldomly do I get a response - sometimes a thanks! but most often NOTHING!?...probably because they do not like getting passed....especially by a girl!

I think it is time to change this view that people have of roadies!! I say wave and say hi to whomever you can! kinda like the smile and others smile....wave and others will wave....can't hurt!!!

There was one guy who absolutely refused to say anything when I talked to him. Didn't, nod, talk, grunt in my general direction - nothing. I just moved on.

I wonder if he might have been deaf? Regardless, talk about uncomfortable!

Maybe he's posting right now somewhere else about the guy who pulled up beside him and wouldn't shut up!

Touche!

well, roadie, mtn biker, triathlete, the guy is a D_bag!   When running I always give a nod or a wave...seems to be appropriate to me.  Just continue to be friendly...it will probably pizz them off!

On the trail where I ride, about half of the people are fairly friendly.  I always nod or wave at all of the people coming the opposite direction - if they wave or nod back, we had a friendly exchange, and if not, no loss.  If I am passing someone from behind, I always announce 'on your left', and follow it up with a 'thank you' or a 'good morning' as I am going by (I don't want them to think I was yelling at them) - most return the greeting.  Trying to be sociable on the trail usually works out well - I have ended up having people join me for a few miles on a couple of occasions - working with and talking with someone else for a little while breaks the monotony since I normally train alone.

most of the time I wave but some others I don't just because I might be suffering pushing through a hard session or just I might not be paying attention. I dont take it personal as I am out there to do my trainning; but I think you need to post a pic of your helmet just to make sure it is not a girl's helmet

There are jerks everywhere both rodies or tri-geeks, don't sweat it...

There is absolutely nothing girly about this helmet. I got it just incase I ever lead the Giro d'Italia.

Edit to say that I can't even resize a pic on the second attempt. Someone help out a non-computer reject.

You could really offend him and get the slipstream/chipotle kit that matches your helmet.

Law of the Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were
driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a
parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his
breaks, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver
of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My
taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was
really friendly.

So I asked, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car
and sent us to the hospital!"

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, "The Law of the
Garbage Truck." He explained that many people are like garbage trucks.
They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger,
and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a
place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it
personally.

Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their
garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the
streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks
take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with
regrets, so... "Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones
who don't."

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!
