A bit off the OP question, but what about for an Olympic or longer race?

I don't wear an HRM during sprints, but I did during an Olympic race because I was worried about burning out on the bike. I feel like I didn't push hard enough on the bike, but I was sure tapped out by the end of the run.

In a sprint, I feel that it is optional. If you feel more comfortable using one, then go ahead.

In Olympic and HIM distances, I definitely use mine to help with pacing.

I tend to go too hard on the bike since it's my best discipline.

I would wear it just to ge the stats.  Like most have said, don't look at it for a sprint, i.e.: put a piece of tape over it.  For Oly you might want to remove the tape if you have pacing problems.  For HIM & IM I'd definately remove the tape...

And (LOL!), yes, if you feel bad then no need to look at you HRM.
