My YMCA shuts down the indoor pool in a lightning storm.  A strike that doesn't follow the grounding could transfer some juice through the water on the way into the ground and fry you.  I would exit an inside pool in the presence of lightning.

We have a saying in sailing, "there's right and then there's DEAD right."  Famous epitath on a sailor's tombstone... "But he had the right of way!"

You or the pool may say it's OK to swim during the storm and you would be right.  And if that weren't the case and something went horribly wrong, you would be...  DEAD right.

Tongue out

I have always thought it was an unnecessary precaution but I googled it.  I found out that evacuating both indoor and outdoor pools is the recommended approach by the National Lightning Safety Institute.

The reason cited is the ability of the piping connected to the pool to conduct current from long distances away into the pool.   I guess I buy that.

Yeah, it won't be the window, it will be the ground paths that bring in current if it happens. Lightning would never hit a window on a side of a building. It would hit the building at its tallest point - the shortest path to ground.
