Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:50. Had a powerbar and some coffee. Was out the door by 5:30.
Event warmup:

Snuck into the Ironhead parking (lol) and quickly hopped on the bike for a 10-15min WU. Felt pretty good. Stayed in the small ring the whole time. I got back to the car and talked with Court for a while then headed to set up transition. Got heckled quite a bit about last weekend, but took it well :) Once everything was set up I chatted it up w/ Scott and Aaron then headed down to the swim start to talk w/ court and Matt B.

Comments:

Started out right next to Tyler Johnson. (the eventual winner) Gun went off and I shot right out to the front. Just hung onto the first one out. The waves were coming straight at us. It was by far the most brutal swim ive been in. Rounded the first bouy and I was getting smashed in the face by waves. I breathe left side only so it was a constant barrage of waves into my mouth. Funny thing was, that I found it fun. It was challenging and I felt way more hard core than normal :) We quickly started encountering the wave in front. Most of them were HANGING onto the bouys! It was crazy. People were just wading. I just plowed right through them and eyed that last bouy. Took a right and headed straight for the shore. The last stretch was nice because I was breathing left side and the waves were now coming from my right so I really took advantage of this and pushed the last stretch. Swam till my hands touched and I was up. felt awesome. Another fantastic swim done.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Comments:

Balls to the walls. I knew I was the first person out in my wave so I just focused on keeping Tyler behind me. If he was going to win I was gonna make him work for it. Came out of T1 and immediatly started to push the pace. Passed a few people from the wave ahead. Came to the dam and the winds were really pushing from the side. I was starting to regret racing w/ the disk. About halfway out on the damn there is this tower and the winds were REALLY blowing around it. People had mentioned it but I figured they were exagerrating. NOPE. I almost got blown into the guardrail. I kept keeping an eye out for the return guys in the wave ahead but still didnt see them. Made it to the turnaround and I knew id get a good idea as to where Tyler was. Turned and He was maybe 30yrds back. Damn. Well.. all I could do was push the pace and try to wear him out for the run now. Came down the small incline and pushed. I knew at this point I was sitting in 4th not including the time diff. With the time diff I was in first. Made it back to the end of the damn and Tyler still hadnt passed me. I knew if he caught me hed just sit back there because hes such a strong runner. We turned around one last time and he was till about 30-40yrds back. When I rounded the last cone I decided to push it a bit more. I wanted to open up a bit of a gap and make him work then wait for him on the run so I could "draft" off him. Came into transition still in fourth. Dismounted realllly smoothly and ran into T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2

Comments:

Ugh. So its official. I need those stupid "quick" laces or whatever.
What would you do differently?:

Not use my regular laces. I couldnt get my shoe on. Left of course.
Run

Comments:

Ran out and new Tyler wasnt anymore than :20 behind. Just chilled and waited for him. He quickly caught up and I stayed side by side w/ him. We passed everyone and they knew Id get dominated but it was fun to try and hang with an ex collegiate runner. About half a mile in I let him go. From there on out it was survival. When I was with him we were probably running a 5:30ish or faster pace. My last mile was ugly. Crossed the line and congratulated Tyler on another win :)
What would you do differently?:

Stay with tyler. despite the fact that i probably cant. lol. If that makes sense.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran 2miles EZ with Tyler... after having a beer and a bagel :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just lack of training right now... but i still gave it all I had.

Event comments:

Another great Ironhead race.

Jacks races are the most organized you'll ever find.

Jeebus...those are some sick times. Congrats on a great race.

Tyler was smoking out there. I raced Saturday, and he won that race as well. You must have pushed him hard because I think he shaved over a minute off of his time. He flew by me on the bike...after starting a wave or two behind me on the swim.
