Subject: Running with hand weights
Is it me or am I starting to see more ads and fitness shows with people running with hand-weights? Anyone out there tried it, does it really help with anything? And I know you don't do that on your long runs! They would probably drive me crazy.

I have heard that it throws off your natural gait and therefore is not a good idea - I'd be interested to know if others have heard the same

yeah I would not do it. I think the gains would be rather minial. I think your better off working on your form and concerntrate on building more millage than using hand weights.

If you want some extra weight I would more go with a weight vest.

Problem also is extra weight anywhere puts more strain on joints so why do that to yourself? I think it would lead more to injury espically if you are using hand weights.

I remember people doing it in the late '70-early '80's haven't seen anyone carrying hand weights for a long time.  I can't imagine it's too good for the joints and back.

yeah I agree, I think you're asking for trouble doing that.  I always figure I have enough weight to lug around anyway, heh, heh.  Work on form and other types of speed drills to get faster.

Timely - I often workout at a state park and I've seen a lot of these there lately. I'm all for everyone getting out there but I'm sure they would be better off raising their heart rate than lugging these things around. I don't know what benefit they think they are getting.

Someone mentioned speedwork. Not even that, per se. Just pick a point up the road - 10, 20, 50 yds and go faster than your current pace.  Go back to your oringianl pace at least twice that distance. then repeat. Eventually, gradually increase the higher intensity durations. Always warm-up, always cool down. Simple as that.
