Subject: Exciting News about Motor City Triathlon!
I had the pleasure of chatting with Richard Swor of Dearborn yesterday evening. Richard is a U.S.A.T. National Age Group Champion at the Olympic distance and an elite level competitor. He mentioned he will be at Motor City racing on Belle Isle to defend his title as the 2007 overall champion at Motor City.

Last year Swor was out of the water in 22:59, averaged 24.2 M.P.H. on the bike and ran a blistering 5:54 pace on the run to win in 1:59:22, the only athlete to crack two hours in the race and with a winning margin of over six minutes.

Richard is a great guy and a fine sportsmen and being able to see a national class athlete race on home turf- let along one from our (my) home town is huge.

He says the course is fast and we may even get a break from the wind early in the morning. I hope he's right....

Hopefully he's done hurdles in track before, because the trail portion is a complete obstacle course of fallen trees and branches. The condition of the pavement in there seems worse than last year too. We just went there today to do a brick...lots of glass in the bike lane, not so much in the car lanes, and the trail was bad...borderline worse than AA.

I hope they do something about the trail, but the rest of the pavement on the island is perfect! From what I remember, there was barely any wind last year in the AM.

Trail? I didn't even know we were running on a trail!?! Fiddlesticks. I was hoping for a decent run.

Dang.

It's a paved path.  You run north from transition and head into a wooded area in the center of the island that is paved.  The pavement is, however, buckled in areas, so you have to run over paved "roots and rocks".

I'm actually looking forward to the challenge of the obstacle course. I love trail running, this will be like a mix of both worlds.

Yeah, you are on pavement, of some sort But I saw a couple wipeouts last year. There are roots popping up through the pavemetn, and cracks, buckles, etc. It was like trail running, without the dirt! (and hills). But you get the point. Just be careful and watch your footing through some of the areas so you dont trip. Thats about the only problem.

Were you going based on your knowledge of last year's course or do you know where to get a course map?  tnx

I just emailed 3 disciplines. They said they'll be out hacking apart the fallen trees back there before the race. Other than on the Motor City website I don't know if there is an exact run map.

And...luckily the trail part is only one mile or so long (you'll be on it twice for the Oly). The rest is perfect flat pavement.

I was going to suggest that we get some good 'ole boys out there with a broad axe and a chainsaw and let them do their lumberjack thing. If I knew where to send them I could probably get it hooked up... I know a couple guys who might enjoy it.

Richard torched Johan's Oly this weekend in 1:59:44 to take first in a pretty stacked field; 1:28 ahead of the #2 finisher.
