I did my first try 2.5 weeks ago (on a Saturday)....I went to the gym the next Monday to have a session with my personal trainer and everything felt fine funny enough....but my workouts on the Wednesday and Friday were ROTTEN.  I quite often do 30 min at 6.5 mph on the treadmill as warmup before my strength sessions and that week I could BARELY go 5.6 or 5.8 mph!!!  The next week things were back to normal though!

Congrats on your first race!!!

The time it takes for your body to recover after an all-out effort will be longer than a regular workout. You can shorten this time by doing more intense workouts more often (which will also have the side effect of making you lots faster). As your body acclimates to hard efforts [racing], this time will shorten as well.

The day after I completed my 1st TRI my legs felt a little sore. I went to the gym with the intention to stretch and walk on the tread mill. I ended up running 2 miles and my legs loosen up and I felt a lot better. Only problem was that the next day I was dead, my legs felt like 2 snider blocks. I took the day off and start back into my routine the following day with a swim. I don’t know if running was the smartest thing to do the day after the race. I have another TRI coming up next Fri and I am going to take the following day off to see if it makes a difference. I am on a 6 day a week program with 1 day recovery so I ended up using that day off has my recovery day and just moved my routine around a little and didn’t miss out on any training. Everyone is different so you have to see what works best for you. If your base is there then you should be able to bounce back quickly and if you need a few days off, take them. Don’t push yourself, you’ll end up injured.

By the way Congrats on your finish..............

Same for me.

First race was Sunday. Felt tired but not wiped Monday. Played some tennis Tuesday and felt AWFUL. Feeling better currently and ready to get back on schedule.

It'll get better as I increase intensity.

it gets easier to get back to it with time training and experince, but gets harder with age.

when i started racing three years ago it was ahrd to workout well the first few days after a sprint, now i can race sprints for a few weekends in a row plus weekly training and be OK for a few weeks, and i just raced a half this past weekend and had my first good workout since it today, and a few more to feel really good again.

it totally depends on you though, each person is diff

I'm usually back to normal by the afternoon of the race. Training as normal the next day. Being wiped out for several days after a sprint could be a signal that your training is not sufficient.

I always seemed to be wiped for a few days after the first race at a new distance.  After the first or second it doesn't seem to be much of a big deal.

You're assuming we're all normal to begin with.  We're triathletes, hence not normal!
