I seem to be the exception to the rule around here. I am NOT a type A personality. I know many triathletes are type A's and are driven to do triathlons because they always need to be doing something.

I am the opposite. I am doing triathlons for many reasons, but one of the biggest is the self discipline if forces me to practice. I am growing tremendously from all of my training.

Any other freaks here on BT, or am I really the only one?

Type A is not only defined as someone having to always do something. There are other descriptors for this personality Type. perhaps you fit into the other ones and really are Type A but just don't shart this particular trait.

Are you seriuos!?!?  Regardless of what personality type some silly chart puts us into, I think we are all freaks on this site!!  How many people would want to work out about 15 hours a week swimming, cycling and running, with the ultimate goal of doing a race that will take anywhere from 10 to 15 hours (Ironman)!?!?

How many people would discuss topics such as calories burnt during workouts, calories consumed, cycling / running cadence, bilateral breathing...the list goes on and on!!

I hope the others don't mind, but I think I speak for everyone here when I say, don't worry...we are ALL freaks here!!

  • ..yep, you're a freakin' frreak alright

  • Honestly, I am the most shy, withdrawn, quiet person you'd ever meet. If we ever meet at an event, I'll be the one over there on the fringes all by myself muttering around and the post event circuis? No thanks ~ I'll be well on my way home.

    NOT A TYPE A HERE!

I am not doing this for comraderie or to network or to be near others who share the same dream (yet, I really do enjoy this site and all the friendly advice)
rather I do it for myself.
It is a GOAL that I set my sights on, for without it, I would still be a cigarette smoking, heavy drinking couch potato, about 60 lbs heavier with no motivation to do anything but change the chanel.

I'd run my own triathlon all by myself this summer if I couldn't find an event near me ~ reminds me of the article in this month's Inside Triathlon magazine of the US military troup that will be running a marathon concurently with the one in Hawaii (if I read it right), circling around their camp for 26 miles JUST BECAUSE.

LOL... I think anyone who seriously trains for a multisport event is a freak of one sort or another!

Nope, you're not the only one. I'm very NOT type A. I love tri's but I'm not very competitive, and I'm happy to finish with an average time. I exercise best when I have a set goal, which is why I started doing this to start with. It's been a great all around experience!

Well, I wasn't sure if I was type A, B, or whatever, so I did a google search and found a test which was backed by yahoo health, so I thought there was so validity to it.  But the dang thing is sooooo long, it's about 90 questions, I gave up 1/4 the way through it.

Here's the link, if anyone is interested.

Probably says something about you, that you set a goal to finish the survey but didn't finish it.

Freaks R Us I guess. I do triathlons for the challenge. I don't need to win, but I do like to compete against myself. It's something fun for me to do and that's why I do it.

I'm with Pooh Bear on this one, I am also a type zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....I would rather sleep than do just about anything else.  But, I am also an avid cyclist who wanted something that I could do with some modicum of success and carry that into my retirement years (coming soon).  Since I like swimming and running, triathlons seemed a good avenue for me follow.  I will never win anything; the best I can hope for is to beat my last time!

    Another freak

Actually a non-competative true introvert here.

What draws me to triathlons is the time alone in training and the feeling of fitness and strength that develops from that.

    me too.

I was going to reply to this thread yesterday but put off the job of composing something beyond "me too". Actually a Physics professor of mine once pointed out that laziness is a fine motive for developing greater efficiency.

Well, if freak is defined as someone who is lazy, such that triathlon training goes against everything I stand (lie down) for - I would much rather sleep in, go home after wrok, veg in front of the tube, etc etc... -- but I do it anyway?  then yep, guess that's me.

    Definitely not type A!

    Chris

Type M/N here. Right smack in the middle. Still, I have to believe anyone who puts in the grueling time to train for an endurance sport is a freak of some type. Heck, what normal person spends hours in a pool, only to top it off with a bike ride or a long run?

Here's to getting the freak on! :-O

Well the test says I'm "Type B" but I always suspect those tests because one can (usually) see what the "right" answer to the question is... I'm probably a bit more "Type A" than I'm willing to admit :-)

I (will) do triathlons because it's hard for me to do something without a goal. My REAL goal is to exercise regularly, get and stay fit, and live more healthy than I have. In order to do that, I use the races as the "test" to get me to "study" by doing the workouts. I can't stand to fail a test, so I study hard. Fortunately, I'm wise enough to define an "A" on the "test" as "the best I can do" instead of breaking the tape. Otherwise I'd fail a lot!! :-) :-)

    48 - yeeha!! perfectly balanced - apparently!!!

My wife thinks I'm nuts, and so do alot of my friends, but then again if I look at the alternative, over weight & unfit, little self respect, well then I am nuts!!! At least the score makes me feel normal!!!

Well... last year was my first year: I was really surprised to find out that I am so scared, I knew I'm introvert but that much? I was so ashamed and scared that I skipped all tri- events, I was not prepared enough/at all... I went to 5k races only cus I considered them a training... people there was so frendly! And it was something, for first season.
Maybe I am afraid that people will think I don't belong there. What is important is what I feel. And I feel I do belong!
I live my life, not my fear! Is this answer to your question?
I decided to participate in 5k league this year and in 1,5k swimming league, I "just" need to make the cutoff time. And sprints... I want them to be sheer fun!
