Expert 834 Medina, MN | Subject: Turtleman vs. St. Paul Ok, so having survived Liberty, I'm trying to pick out an August tri. With young kids, I want to stay in the Twin Cities area generally, and the two that seem to jump out are St. Paul and Turtleman. Turtleman: I know that Turtleman is very well run. The distances are unique so my times wouldn't be comparable to Olympic distance races, although I could compare paces. All of the routes are loops, so my kids would only see the start, finish and transitions. St. Paul: The early comments on this race all said that it was poorly organized. Did anyone do it last year, and if so, is it getting any better? The distances on this one are the standard Olympic distance, which I view as a positive. Also, each of the courses is two loops, which would be better for the kids. I would think that this would make for a relatively busy course, but I'm not sure if that would be a negative, or just keep it more interesting. Does anyone know what sort of parks/activities there are at each venue for kids to stay busy during the race? My kids will be 5, 5 and 2 by then, so they don't have the patience to sit around and just watch the race. Thanks in advance for any comments you might have. -Matt |

Member 38 Minnesota | Subject: RE: Turtleman vs. St. Paul I can only comment on Turtleman, which is held at a very nice, shaded park, there is a school across the street with a playground. Good luck to mom trying to keep the kids occupied for 2+ hrs! As you noted this is a very nicely organized race, with a very fast bike loop and a flat, mostly unshaded run loop. My only problem with Turtleman is the swim, which is the weediestslogfest, I have ever done! You can probably expect no wetsuits, they do follow the USAT water temp rules to a T and the exit from the lake is very muddy. Were talking sink to yor hip mud holes here! So having said that, 75% of the swim is fine, just expect to climb through heavy weeds at the start and finish. Edited by chuck in st. paul 2008-06-17 8:23 AM |

Expert 834 Medina, MN | Subject: RE: Turtleman vs. St. Paul Yes, I actually borrowed a road bike and did Turtleman in about 1989 when I was home from college. I don't recall much about it other than swimming through weeds and getting passed by hundreds of people on the run.... -Matt |

Elite 2515 Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea | Subject: RE: Turtleman vs. St. Paul I've raced both in the past though I did the sprint at St. Paul which is essentially the one loop version of the Oly. Thoughts:
Nice racing last weekend! Congrats on your first Oly. Cheers! Tom

Veteran 197 Circle Pines, MN | Subject: RE: Turtleman vs. St. Paul I did St. Paul last year, and had a good time. It was a little late going off, but was very laid back. I liked the swim, and the bike is totally closed to traffic. The run is twice around the lake. Vacation sports does not follow the USAT rules, and allowed wetsuits the weekend after Turtleman did not allow them. Now granted it was 60, and drizzle last year, which made some of the hills hazardous on the bike, but the water temp had dropped into the mid 70's. I don't think there is a playground at the beach on Phalen. From what I have heard Turtleman is a great race. Very well done, and I have alot of friends who do that race. There is also one point in the swim where you can stand up and walk if you feel the need. There will be a larger crowd at Turtleman, and there is a big playground. Good luck at either race, Lance |

Master 2346 Dayton, Minnesota | Subject: RE: Turtleman vs. St. Paul I think everyone else has largely covered the main points but I'll chime in here anyway. I also did the oly at St. Paul last year, so I can comment on that one. As mentioned a couple times here and in other threads, any race put on by Vacation Sports is going to be less organized and much more laid back than most other tris. That's just the type of race Randy Fulton puts on, as far as I can tell. (I've raced two and volunteered at one other.) I think it's fine if you know that going in, but is a bit of a shock for those who don't. None of the three I've experienced started on time, and I know the swim course was short last year in St. Paul due to a buoy floating away. I actually am not a fan of the two loop format because for me it's mentally very hard to have to bike/run past the finish area and head out for another lap, but that's just me. If you want your family to be able to cheer you on, then the two loop format is definitely better. I don't recall there being a park near the beach at Phalen but I wasn't really looking for one, so I may have missed it. I am doing St. Paul again this year, so perhaps I'll see you there! |

Not exactly IN the twin cities but it's close enough... |

It's the 25th Anniversary for Turtleman this year, sort of special. Have done it many time and it's on my schedule this year. Unfortunately it's the weekend after my Steelhead 70.3 race but I still signed up because I enjoy doing the race. I like the course. I can't remember if there are swings or things around there for the kids, i never really pay attention to that.

Regular 149 Minneapolis, Minnesota | Subject: RE: Turtleman vs. St. Paul I have done the St. Paul - the sprint in 06 and the oly last year. There is a school with a playground in the vicinity of the starting/transition area. I enjoyed the race, esp. the closed bike course; but ditto what everyone else said about the organization. |
