i picked up some soy milk at the store, and i have to say, it is quite good. i was wondering if anyone knew some +/- to soy milk vs skim milk -- just from looking at the nutritional facts it looks like it has a little bit more calories, and has some fat. is there added nutritional benefits?

They do make light soymilk - and make sure you're buying "regular" and not "vanilla", which has more sugar. Not sure about the benefits, except that I don't like regular milk and so it's just another good way to get calcium (fortified) and protein...

I alternate between skim and soy milk. I usually have both in my fridge - the skim milk is for oatmeal, coffee/tea and my husband, whereas the soy milk tastes good with cereal and fruit.

I drink it because I like the taste, not for health benefits, although I do buy the light soy milk. I know it has no cholesterol, but then again neither does skim milk. I think the oestrogens in it are meant to be good for women, but I'm not clear on how/why.

I also alternate between soy and dairy yogurts and I've recently switched to soy icecream - I like the nutty flavour, it has the same amount of calories as low-fat icecream and no cholesterol, so if I'm going to indulge I feel a bit better for it

Nutritional benefits for me include not causing my stomach to expand with uncomfortable gas (I am lactose-intolerant).

Rice milk is really good too.
Found out that soy milk is not capable of heating up to high temperatures (think lattes) - if you 're using it for that kind of thing, rice milk works better.

Soy must also be taken cautiously if you are taking any type of synthetic thyroid hormone medication (for hypothyroidism) such as synthroid or levoxyl, because too much soy will inhibit the medication from being absorbed.
