Subject: Keep max HR to 130 - WTF???

Here's a quick refresher on my health. I was born with a heart defect called Tetrology of Fallot which is actually 3 defects. I just had a full workup done including a CPET test (measures efficiency of heart and lungs including VO2 max, etc) and CT scan of my heart. They discovered that my right ventricle has a limited output and starves my left ventricle when my HR is about 160. Normally when I excercise, my HR is in the 150-160 range. At first my doc said it was no problem. Today they called and said I should keep my HR between 120 and 130 when exercising.

That's OK for biking (if its flat and I"m not pushing) but for running there's no way! I'm already slow but for my HR to be that low, I'm at like a 14-15 min mile.

This sucks. If I do that I will be DFL in every race and that won't be fun.

So should I listen to the doc (and give up triathlon) or live like I'm dying?

Express your desire and specific intentions to train and workout.  Have them address your specific concerns.

If they stick to their original recomendation, then you get a second opinion if you want.

But I'm not going to EVER suggest going against a Dr.'s recomendation in an issue as serious as this.  I would also suggest not listening to anyone else here on BT if they suggest otherwise.  Tri is not worth your life.

I don't have an answer for you other than to get a second opinion. I also have some heart problems (I have a pacemaker) and my doc has restricted me to max hr of 160 for training but I can go all out for racing.

Ok. after I've calmed down, I've got a call into the office to speak with the doc. this goes beyond triathlon. my wife is terminally ill and will be gone in the next few months. Triathlon (the sport and community) are a large part of my coping. It's the one place I can escape a let loose. Losing this avenue may kill me anyway. I'm 40 years old. This shouldn't be happening! I've only got to live for 10 more years. My youngest will be out of high school and my job will be done.

I’ve seen your most recent posts about your wife and kids and I’m sorry just seems so inadequate.  That being said, you have to live much more than just 10 years there will always be things to do.  There will be weddings and you need to be there to give your girls away.  There will be grandchildren to be spoiled rotten, hopped up on sugar and then returned to their parents in the ultimate Dads/Moms revenge, my mother does this to me as often as she can.  There are ways to participate without putting your health at risk.  Races always need volunteers; there are always relays where you do the bike leg, etc.  I would definitely have another talk with your Dr. and possibly get a second opinion, then do what you need to do for you and your family.

mman, I didn't realise the situation you are in with not just your own health but also that of your wife. I just pray that you make the most of your time with your wife while you can. Also you have to live many more years for your childrens sake, just because they are out of high school doesn't mean that they don't need a dad.

Maybe you can find some other way of exercising or some other hobby that can take the place of triathlon.

I'm praying for you and your family... don't give up.

Kids need grandfathers too.
