I have heard a few reports abotu flats on the javelins that were purchased on closeout. I happened to buy a Narni and flatted BOTH tires on a relatively small crack in the road. I am not experienced enough to know whether or not the hole cause my flats, but the impact wasn;t nearly as bad as some of the potholes I have gone through. My bike was tuned by My LBS, so I assume everything was properly inflated. It happened in my first tri, and it sucked, but I learned my lesson. If you bought a Javelin, definately check out your tires so you don;t have the same problem I did.

*sidenote...it was pouring rain and I did not see the pothole/crack as it was filled with water. I don;t make a habit of hammering into holes.

You know what they say about the ol' -u-me thing, don't you? Sounds like you had pinch flats, the primary cause of which is under-inflated tires. Not sure if your LBS checked your tires, or how much time elapsed between the tuneup and the race, but perhaps in the future check your own inflation prior to the ride.

Is 100-110 PSI the standard? I am riding on clinchers (I have tubes in my tires, I think that is the right one).

I think I learned more on what not to do on my first tri then what to do. That includes my equipment.

Did you check your inflation that morning?  You should always air up your tires or at least check the pressure each time you ride.  Underinflated tires + cracks/rail roads/holes = pinch flats.

That being said, I experienced a flat with properly inflated tires recently.  After hearing about other P2C owners getting flats left and right, I checked out my rim tape.  The stock tape was the plastic kind with no adhesive backing.  When I took the tires and tubes off, it was obvious what had caused my flat -- the tape had shifted all over the dang place and some of the spoke holes were exposed.  A few bucks worth of cloth tape and problem solved!  Hopefully.

I talked to Dave at Javelin when I purchased my Sizzano and he actually suggested that the first thing to do with these bikes was to put new tubes in them since they had been in storage for a while.

I was filling my Varese's tires up to 120 PSI and the most amazing thing happened; the presta valve flew away after I took off to adapter. It just blew away with all 120 PSI of air following it. Just got new tubes yesterday, gonna be fun putting those on. I hate mounting the tire back on. Those last few inches...argh.

I can attest that their rim tape sucks. I've documented it here a few times -- 3 flats (now 4 for a crappy stem) later and my LBS put some new, thicker tape on. He laughed at the crappy tape they put on in the factory.

It seems these tires are exceptionally tough to put back on ... I'm wondering if that's me (a cycling newbie) or if it's these tires?
