Question for the veterans out there:

What typically happens if there is bad weather on race day?  I have a olympic distance tri on Sunday and from the looks on the forecast, there may be some thunderstorms rolling through.  If there is lightning near the start of the race, will they delay the start?

How bad does it have to be to delay the start?

Anyone have a race canceled because of bad weather?

Ironman 70.3 Kansas (June 15) was called DURING the race because of bad weather. The park ranger made the call because of dangerous lightning in the vicinity and possible hail coming. All participants were on the run, about 40% did not get to finish. They said instead of creating a panic by telling runners to take cover, they thought it would be better for runners to go ahead and get transition (so either they were ~8 miles or ~2 miles away from finishing), and stop them there.

It sucked.
Nothing you can do about it though.

Good luck in your race!

Pleasant Prairie Sprint and Oly last year.

Wicked thunder and lightening all morning long.  I mean to the point of not needing a light to be able to see.  Everyone is huddled in the rec center and they continue to keep us updated.  All of a sudden, they say "transition is open till 6:45, race is at 7:00.  We have an opening."

Sure enough, we did.  Stopped raining and everything else from 7 till about noon when the very last person finished.  And then all hell broke loose as the clouds let loose 5 hours of pent up aggression.

Hope they don't cancel on your but be prepared if they do.
