Subject: Numb fingers/pinkies

Hi fellow triathletes,

I rode for a good, long while last Saturday (135 miles, 9+hours). During the ride I noticed the usual discomforts in shoulder and saddle areas, but also some tingling on the outer edges of my hands. It's now a week later, and I still have some residual numbness in my pinkies. I've also lost grip strength with my other fingers and thumb, so holding heavy plates or mugs is hard. Weird, right?

I had not iced it and wish now that I had. I did squeeze a stress ball some, but that hurts now.

Anyone else experience this after a long ride? For a few days, I figured I could endure it, but now I think I need to see my MD and maybe a specialist.

Worst part is that I have 7 days till my half IM swim and I can't hold the "paddle" position with my hands for more than 5 minutes. My fingers just fall open and water slips through

Any help or sympathy here?

Thanks, -Sunny

I'm not an MD, but perhaps you're experiencing ulnar neuropathy? Very common injury among cyclists. It's a compression injury, much like carpal tunnel syndrome, but affecting a different nerve branch.

Treatable with anti-inflammatory meds AFAIK, but also something that can become chronic if left untreated or repeatedly re-aggravated.

Thanks, Xan.  It's quite possibly that very thing -- some kind of neuropathy is likely, and ulnar seems related to cyclists, so yeah...worth looking at.  Really helpful link! I'll try to get in with my MD this week and see if anything can be done to rehab the injury ASAP.  I'm so nervous about swimming next Saturday without my full "paddle strength".

Hey Sunny, I have something similar.  My doc thinks it's from hunching or same shoulder/upper back posture for a long time that a nerve is pinched.  It pulls on the ulnar nerve (inside of the elbow) so essentially you have got tennis elbow on the inside of your arm (tennis elbow is the outside).  Try to stretch out the upper back, have a (series of) massage etc.  Now I use a Trigger Point massage ball to loosen up my upperback/shoulder blade areas and the numbness occurs much less often in less intensity.
