Subject: Olympic hourly training totals?

Hello fellow Clydes & Athenas! I reviewed the plans on BT but wanted to get actual feedback from those of you who are doing, and have done, training for Olympics and your weekly hour totals? I know current fitness plays a potential role in training requirements to do this distance [as well as if you're doing it to 'race' or just 'finish' like me :] so if you'd mention that as well I might get a better picture overall? I'm just getting into training again and am trying to figure out how long I might need & training volume along the way before I can do this distance (I can do Sprint distance currently).

Thanks much!

Welcome back back!!!. Most people tend to follow the training plan found on BT. I will be doing my first Oly. in 20 days however, my trianing is for the HIM in Oct. But with it being so hot in Phx Im only training 3-4days a week. Hours, yeah I am only in month one of the HIM training so Im below the Oly training.

Slow is fast and fast is faster than me!

I'm putting in 7-9 hours a week for my Olympic training (race is the beginning of September) but also trying to work my base up before I start HIM training this fall. Will probably taper a bit the week or two before the race.

I'm training about 7-9 hours a week also. I'm following BT's 16 week Olympic program and I like it a lot. It allows for two full rest days a week which I feel that I need. I'm just one of those people that does better with a more moderate training program and more rest.

My race is at the end of July and my goal is to finish in 3 hours or less so we'll see how I do!

I think my first Oly (to just finish) I was training usually around 6-8 hours per week.  I was following a plan, but skipped some of the workouts, etc.  This was going to Olympics from sprint distance.  I tried doing more but got too tired, stressed, etc. so I think the jump in volume at that time was too much.  (About 4-6 hours per week training for a sprint.)  This was ok to finish but not to really push hard at any point.

Then after that - more like 8-10 with a few 12 hour weeks thrown in there.   And, some good solid multiple weeks of 10 hour training.  A lot of the jump was in cycling hours for me, I went from doing 10-20 mile long rides to 20 mile medium and 30+ long rides.

Here's something I found, you can get away with minimal training for a sprint, cause really, it's not all THAT long, but if you try that for an Oly you are in for a world of hurt post-race.  I've done one Olympic where I did not sufficiently train (and I knew it) the race sucked, and I ended up with a migraine afterwards, and I caught some virus and was sicker than a dog for a week.  It probably took me close to 3 weeks to recover from that race.

Thanks very much for all your info! I'm using the Sprint to Olympic 12week plan (mid to late Sept. is the latest Tri events occur near me within 200+ miles therefore that's my timeline, but that 16 week plan someone mentioned w/ 2 days off sounds awesome!) and the weekly training hours vary between 7-11ish so hopefully I can meet those goals.

One thing I noticed was that considering for a Sprint I've avg'd about 35min for running, day 3 of this training plan calls for a 1hr run and I'm thinkin' that's a huge jump in time! Besides not thinking I can do that (w/ out walking, not walking is my personal goal w/ the running event) I'm also leary of shin splints and other injuries that can occur when you increase more than 10% in a week (a basic average I've heard of?). I'll just do what I can (maybe use walking these first few weeks to make the hour?) and do my best to work my way up.

Thanks again!

June's totals:

Run:10h 53m 38s  - 78.94 Mi
Swim:7h 08m 22s  - 18840 Yd

works out to a little over an hour a day or 7+ hours a week

That's kinda what I did for my first - I dialed it back if it seemed to big of a jump at once.  So, instead of an hour, 45 minutes since that would seem more reasonable a jump from 35 to 45 min, than 35 to an hour.

I'd rather finish happy and healthy (and possibly be a little slower) than really push and end up injured and/or too stressed out.

Great feedback guys, thanks again! I learned how to create my own plan, imported it and will gradually build all 3 events in time/distance over the next 11 weeks.

I also found that cutting back the time and effort every 4th week by around 40 % really helps the body recover and grow stronger in the long run. It also helps reduce overuse injuries and that chronic feeling of always being tired.
