I'm volunteering this year. I'll be on line to get my voucher for 2009.

But the housing has got me freaked. I don't want to spend ridiculous money on a room. I hear about the frenzy of people reserving hotel rooms the day they sign up. What should I plan to do when I'm up there this year? Where are all these condo's that people talk about? Should I stay near the start? Where do people park if they drive in on race day? What...what...what????

I could stay up near the opposite end of town - is that kinda 'no-mans' land (i.e. too far to walk to start, but if I'm driving anyway is it much cheaper a little further out) ?

Those that are staying there this year get first dibs on the same place. There are two brokers that I found that had many places to rent but they were horrible at getting back to us as they are swamped.  The condo going price I found for '08 was like $2500+ for a week most were more like $3200+. Farther away the cheaper it was.

Lots of folks have multiple racers stay in a bigger place and split the cost.

My family is 7 so no sharing for us. I opted to stay farther out to save money. We are staying out about 10 miles on the bike course but it was about 40% of staying closer. Saving money and being able to cook was more important to us staying close.

Last year when we went to watch we stayed 60+ miles away and took the shuttle bus from the other end of Lake Placid which was fine.

My suggestion is to set a budget and start looking around. I found a website that had link to many places I think from the IMLP website and I did a lot of searching before hand. If you could look around and talk to folks the couple of days before the race you might have a leg up.

Try using vrbo.com to find a house or condo. As Kathy posted, there are a couple of property managers who have a lot of listings, but I never did get them to respond back to me.

Personally I think a house or condo is the way to go for an IM. The convenience of having some space and preparing your own meals is huge.
