Subject: Race volunteering question
How far before a race can someone sign up to volunteer?

The reason I ask is because I am trying to volunteer for the Bassman Half Distance tri in Oct in NJ (2 of my friends will be racing so I would like to volunteer) and no one has responded to my email at the address given on the site. Not sure if perhaps it is too early for them to think of volunteers, but I would have thought someone would have responded to my email by now, I sent it several weeks ago.

Thanks in advance,

K.

Depends on the RD, really.  IM done by NAS generally start volunteer sign up several months in advance.   Most races, however, you can just show up and say you want to volunteer (you can do this at IMs as well, you just won't get your favorite spot necessarily) the day of.

Maybe just try sending the email again?  Sometimes it'll take them awhile to get back to you... especially three months out.  Races are always anxious for volunteers so they'll definitely want your help!

I did Bassman HIM last year and they were desperate for volunteers. I've emailed the RD a number of times about a couple of races I've done and he has gotten back to me promptly.

I'd see if perhaps you could send another email perhaps to race director.

I'm sure they will be glad to have you help. It is a fun race in a nice location.

I've only volunteered for one, and for all the races run by this particular production company, you can submit yourself to volunteer whenever, and it says that they will contact you about a week before the race. Not sure how it works with other races, but maybe it's just too early. At the race I volunteered for, they definitely had need for more people - it wasn't understaffed, I don't feel, but more volunteers wouldn't have been a bad thing, either.

We've signed up a year in advance (Steelhead).  We've also "shown up" but this doesn't help RD's nearly as much as even several days/weeks notice.

Kathy, maybe this is part of the problem. The email at the website just gave me a generic [email protected] or whatever address. Do you have an email for the RD? I couldn't find anything on the website specific to volunteering so was wondering if my email would get lost by going to the generic one. If I don't get in contact with someone I'll just wait patiently (something I'm not very good at). I figure I'll be there the weekend of the race, if they need help I'll be available, and if not I'll just jockstrap for my friends!

I will probably be up on Friday night so while my friends do training rides I would be available to volunteer and help set up. Thanks for the help and suggestions everybody!
