Subject: Rim Tape?

So I'm preparing for my first race this weekend and I'm putting my brand new race tires together. The wheels are Ksyrium elites and the tires are Michelin pros and the tubes are Forte 700x19-26 ultra lights. Ok so before I put all of these things on, because my wheels are brand new am I missing something to put on the rim before the tube/tire? When I changed a flat on my old tires I vaguely remember there being some colorful lining on the rim. I just don't want to put my new stuff on just to have the tires blow because I overlooked something.

(Oh, and feel free to berate me for waiting until a few days before the race to put my wheels together)

Yes, you need rim tape.

LBS should have some. Cost a couple bucks.

If not, electrical tape, thin masking tape, darn near any tape could work in a pinch.

Alright thanks, I'm glad I asked!

I think I'll just bring the wheels with me when I get my bike tuned up thursday as I don't think I'll have time to pick up rim tape and do it myself before I have to pack my stuff up Friday morning.

NO MASKING TAPE!

Nylon-reinforced packing tape, yes, double layered. I raced on this for several years.

But by far the best, easiest solution is Velox rim tape. Get the MEDIUM width. The narrow stuff often doesn't cover the rim eyelet edges, and causes chafing (and eventually a flat).

You don't need rim tape since you have Ksyrium Elite wheels. These rims do not have spoke eyelets in the rim. The only thing rim tape will do for these wheels is increase rotating mass.

One thing to look for on these rims is to make sure there are no burrs around the valve hole. If there are, take a small file and smooth it. Or you could take an old tube and cut a short length (<2") and cut a small hole in it for the tube's valve stem and use it to guard against abrasions from the valve hole.

Best of Luck at your first race. Have Fun.
