Subject: T1: Tri shorts/Tri Jersey question
In my 2nd season of triathlons I decided to buy a new bike. I also thought while I'm spending the big bucks, I might as well get some new tri-shorts and a new tri-jersey. I have heard many opinions on this, but how do the racers usually handle transition one with a jersey and tri-shorts. Wear the jersey in the water, put the jersey on dry in T1 or roll the jersey under you tri-shorts during the swim and pull over you arms as you exit the water? Any advice based on past experience would be great. Thanks,

Derek

I put on my tri shorts, HRM, and jersey first (before swim start). Then I put my wetsuit on over everything. The jersey and shorts stay some-what dry (not entirely). Most jerseys and shorts are made out of a material that partially repells water and dries very quickly. By the 5th mile on the bike I am usually dry, that is until I start sweating. This way in T1 the only thing I have to do is take off the wetsuit and put on the helmet.

Thanks for the reply. Any advice if you don't use a wetsuit? I currently don't own one, maybe next year.

Any advice if you don't use a wetsuit?

Yes, stay out of cold water. ;-)

Seriously, any one of those options that you outline would work, except it is difficult to put the jersey on over your head when you are wet from the swim. Most people seem to swim with their jersey/trisuit on, though in my last tri most men stayed just like you are in your photo (shirtless) throughout the whole deal. We're still trying to get the women to adopt this procedure.

Certainly would increase interest in triathloning as a spectator sport. ;-)

Hey Bear quick question.

How different are Tri jerseys from a regular bike jersey?

Thank you,

zg,

We'll have to judge on a case-by-case basis. Post a picture and we'll vote on it.

Might want to look at a tight/form-fitting jersey, vs. one that is at all baggy for the swim. Definitely want to avoid swimming in a baggy jersey, or trying to put one on in T1. Trying to get a jersey on while you are wet, and trying to hurry through T1 is not fun. I did my first 2 tris that way, and learned the hard way that it's not easy.

Zoot makes one, I've got that one, and it doens't add any perceived drag from what I can tell. Other makers I'm sure have one similar.

Differences: tri jersey is generally tighter and has much smaller pockets (if any). Depending on manufacturer, material may be different (e.g., thinner, more mesh, different weave) to make it more slippery in the water and/or dry faster out of the water.

Coredump,
I actually purchased a Sugoi tri-jersey which is very tight fitting. I think putting the jersey over my head and tucking the whole thing it into my shorts during the swim may be the best option. Then I can just pull it over my shoulders after putting my HR monitor on. That way the jersey is already wet and over my head. Although I haven't tried it yet, so I'm not sure how much that will bunch up in my shorts.

And if there are pockets, they are usually mesh pockets to reduce the drag during the swim.

Personally, I prefer to swim with just my tri shorts.  I don the cycling jersey, which has the racing bib pinned to it, after the swim leg.  I ensure that the jersey is rolled up so that I need only slip it over my head and roll it down onto myelf.  It is also sleeveless so that my arms slip in quite easily.

If it fits tight, you can put HRM on before the swim, and the jersey ( or wetsuit ) will keep it in place. Then you don't have bunch it up in your shorts, or spend time in T1 putting on HRM.

Just a thought, but do what works best for you.

You guys have taken my passion for lip cosmetics and turned it into a tawdry expression of topless athleticism!

Or something...

All I read was something about wearing lipstick WITHOUT a jersey?

Swamped at work... Catch you guys on the flipside.....WHIZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I've got a snug-fit Titan tri top that I've been trying out. I like it a lot for the bike and run, but haven't gotten comfortable swimming with it yet and it is almost impossible to put on at T1 when I'm wet. At my last race I swam in my tri shorts and put on a relatively loose Nike sleeveless dry-wick jersey at T1. I'm doing a race this coming weekend with a 400yd pool swim and may try wearing the Titan top.

I haven't tried swimming in my tri jersey.  If it's not a wetsuit legal swim I use a 1 piece tri suit.  Putting on anything while you're wet is impossible!  I don't want to be wrestling with a jersey in T1.  It's bad enough when I'm wrestling with the wetsuit.
