I think Greg and I are in too. I would like to be able to add on about 10 or 15 miles somehow though.

This sounds like a nice ride (and a close drive).  I'm going to try to make it (with friends).  Any cost/contribution exprected?

Nope!  Just a group ride that Outspokin Bikes organizes every week!  I'm sure they'd love it if you shopped there, but it's not required!

I emailed a guy at Outspokin to confirm they allow tri bikes on thier ride and here's the reply:

We'd love to have you guys! We've got a couple of tri-guys that do the
ride already. Our only requirement is that you don't use aero bars in
a paceline. Most of the current tri-guys hang out behind the main
group and just sit in the aero position. See you on Saturday!

I'm sure this won't be a problem, but I thought I'd post his reply for those that are going on the ride!

i'll be there!

JUST so you guys know..this group is fast. I've ridden with them twice and the pace is very taxing. If your looking for a moderate ride, this is not the one. If your looking to be pushed, you will be!

it is a beautiful ride!

The peeps at Outspokin are cool. They happen to be my LBS FYI: The beginner's ride begins an hour earlier, at 7 AM, and is a no drop ride. Last week they had 19 people, according to the web site!

So do we think that the 16-18 avg is not accurate?  I didn't want to do the 7am ride b/c it's too short...but at the same time several of us will be in the final week of taper for Steelhead and don't plan on hammering it for 30 miles.

Is the course marked, I think I saw that it is...in that case we can start with them and see how it goes.

I do recall markings...so yes, and they usually print out maps for the ride.

I can tell you if the pace is the same as last year, you will be pushing it. So if tappering is in your cards, (assuming it was me) i would probably opt for this ride another weekend. Thats just me though. I'm not the strongest of riders by any stretch of the imagination.

also, 16-18 is probably accurate...but its much different than the 16-18 on the comet or colums.. i recall quite a few large climbs the second half of the ride...so keep plenty in the reserves for the last half.

So, will there be folks in the main ride that are slower?  I'm 16 mph on a good day.  I'd be happy to ride in the back on the pack with my aero bars.  Anyone care to join me?

Nothing says you need to stay with the main pack. Those on taper can simply create their own pack and just ride the course. Never let the fast roadies stop you.

I'm bummed I won't be able to ride this one, as it looks like a great route - lots of good roads; I'm happy to be on vacation though and Mindy has indicated there's some good cycling where we'll be.

To Steven's point about climbs, you'll find a nice steady uphill after mile 20, once you're on Mountain/King Rd (off Birmingham).  At the top of this stretch, you'll turn right onto Freemanville and continue climbing, albeit more steep, esp. the section where the road bends to the left.  Between Mtn/King and the climb on Freemanville, you'll cover ~1.5 miles...be safe everybody and have fun.

Look forward to doing this one in the future!

The hubby schedule his tennis match for 9 am Saturday.  Bummer!  I'm out this time.  Anyone planning to do the Covington Century on August 2?
