Subject: Another "am I ready" thread...

I posted this to the mentor group I'm in, but thought I could get some feedback here too.

I really (REALLY) want to do my first HIM late this year, because otherwise I'll be waiting until Wildflower. But.... the only one I can find within a reasonable distance is Silverman. The timing is good...... I would have close to 4 months to get ready...... but it's Silverman. Am I crazy? Could I possibly be ready for this?

Some highlights of my current abilities:

My best event is the bike. The longest ride I've been on is 50 miles, I think overall it had about 2000 feet of climbing. The loops I regularly do are about 22-35 miles with about 800-1700 feet of climbing, so not super hilly but not flat. During my oly Saturday I placed 16/32 in my age group on the bike, which was much better than the swim or run.

I am a slow runner. My 10k at the end of Saturday's oly took 1:04:XX. I'm training for a half marathon (my 2nd) which is on Sept 13. I'm getting faster, but it's taking some time.

Swimming.....well I'm confident of my ability to swim 1.2 miles without drowning and within the time limit, how well I do it depends on how successful I am at overcoming my laziness and scheduling issues.

So what does everyone think??? Am I crazy for thinking I might be able to do this without being DFL??? Is it too much too soon??? I'm so confused!!

Speaking from the perspective of a person that started training the end of January and burnt myself out so I didn't train at all the last two months leading up to a 70.3, yes you have plenty of time.

If you do not train enough you will need to decide if you can do the race and work through the pain, I did. I am planning to do another in September to redeem myself, so, I have about 7 1/2 weeks to prepare, you are better off than me.

Go for it I say!

I am only going by descriptions of the course.... can you start hill training?  like now?  like 5,000 feet in 50 miles (try to hit 1K feet per 10 miles, I'd say)?  and hilly runs?  If you can train on the right terrain then yeah, you've got plenty of time.  But you'll have to be getting at it.  The THree Sisters can be very spiteful.....

I'm jealous, supposed to be a great race

And who cares if you're DFL?  (i know, easy for me to say )

If you can't get in that kind of training, I say skip it, but you're stil going to have to do a ton of hills for Wildflower.

You say you have four months (20 weeks) to get ready?  You can already ride the distance, you say you already can swim the distance (it's pretty much the same as the Oly).  You've already done the run distance.   only question at this point is stringing them together.    You can do this!

20 weeks to train sounds like enough (based on my VERY limited experience)  but if you're not used to hills and there are hills, I'd suggest you get on them!

The hills ate my lunch at Buffalo Springs HIM - mostly on the run and mostly on the downhill, believe it or not.  So my 2 cents worth is be sure you include running downhill as well as uphill in your training.  Good Luck.

PS if your training is not progressing you can always DNS.

Coming from someone who did the Silverman half last year..  here is part of my story..

Never did any triathlon at all!!  Not even a sprint and signed up for Silverman half.  Started to train in about late June.  First swim was only 25 meters and had to stop.  Did a total of about 300 yards, 25 at a time.  My first run was about 1/8 mile and had to walk.  First bike ride was at Lake Mead and did the station to station which is about 23 miles or so and was beat.  At the time, I was about 265lbs...

I swam about two days a week, rode my bike on saturday mornings and ran maybe three days a week, 3-4 miles at a time with plenty of walking.  From the sounds of it, you have a good base..  We currently have:

109 days 14 hours 22 minutes and 58 seconds till Silverman 08*.  I am signed up for the full this year.

You have plenty of time to train, and YES you should do the race.  It is awesome.  Frank (RD) puts on a GREAT race.  Tons of volunteers, food, support, etc.  You wont find a better race.  PM me if you want to chat some more

You already said you're "in" but I want to add:

Go for it! 4 months is plenty of time considering the info you provided. Sounds like an awful course but if you can make yourself train on similarly awful stuff then you should be fine. I think being able to ride the course beforehand helps too - like 3 months beforehand, that way you scare yourself into ONLY training on hills. Worked for me this year!

Froglegs, are you in?  Silverman is awesome...  106 days to go.  Join a spinning class, it will help.  I train on the race course weekly..  There are some hills, but then you get that same hill as a nice downhill on the way home...

Looks like you've got one aspect of training down pat.  That's a good start!
