I'm a big advocate of eating real food to recover, but sometimes I'm too lazy or tired, and when it's summer and it's hot I tend to have some trouble eating enough after a hard/long workout. My favorite recovery drink is a nice frosty beer but experience has led me to know that it doesn't work all the time, especially not on an empty stomach when you weight 100 lbs.

I'm thinking about trying a recovery drink mix after my harder/longer workouts, as well as strength sessions. I will probably mix it with vanilla or chocolate soy milk (I'm lactose intolerant), though having the ability to mix it with water in a pinch would be good. Lately I've been drinking chocolate soy milk by itself, but I'd like to find something to help a bit with soreness.

So... do any of these actually taste good and work as advertised?

I'm surprised how good Muscle Milk Recovery is (and plain old Muscle milk).  It's mixed with water, but still tastes like a milkshake.  I love every flavor they have, especially the vanilla.....

I'm no expert, but if it's soreness that you are trying to overcome after a long/hard workout...why not just add a scoop of Glutamine to your soy milk or whatever beverage you prefer? It's cheap (I get mine at Walmart or Target for $9.99 a canister) and effective (for me anyways) in helping with recovery...and you can mix it in just about anything if you buy a brand that has no flavoring. Like I said, I use the Body Fortress brand that can be found at Walmart or Target. It has no flavor, and really doesn't alter the taste of whatever beverage you mix it in...at least not to the point where you'd notice it much.

For flavor... x2 on the Muscle Milk, that stuff tastes great. Probably because of the fats.

This doesn't quite answer your question, and probably isn't what you want to hear, but one of the best things I've found for aiding recovery after a particularly hard run or bike is... an ice bath.

Thanks for all the tips so far! I've heard Muscle Milk does taste pretty good from other sources and might have to give it a whirl.

Keep 'em coming if you've got 'em.

Have you tried Recoverite from Hammer? Carbs, whey protein and glutamine. It works very well for me and the group I train with.

MM Light in Choc. Mint, when blended with crushed ice, tastes exactly like a Mint Mocha Frappuccino from Starbucks.  I actually pitched an entire drink from Starbucks over Christmas when I realized I couldn't tell the difference.  The key is the blender.  MM Light is a bit too thick for me if just done in a shaker cup.  Regular MM is higher in calories & fat if that matters to you.  MM Collegiate or Light are lower cal/fat options.  Test out a few flavors.

I've recently started using the Luna recovery drink mix, strawberry-banana flavor. (they also make a dark chocolate flavor) I've mixed it with water and milk and I really like it. It doesn't have a ton of protein (8g per serving in 8oz) but I can double up and mix it in 16 oz like I did after my long ride on Sunday. It's about $15.99/canister on sale at Performance but I'm willing to pay a little bit more for something that tastes good.

everyone is different, so these posts are only limited help.

I think citrus Endurox might be the single best tasting sweet drink ever made, so that is clearly my choice. Many hate it.
I found recoverite only barely drinkable. Like much hammer stuff the sweatness is subdued. Some like that, others do not.
Chocolate milk is hard to beat . . . so very yummy.

I have found that I really like Twin Lab's endurance fuel for my recovery drink. It has all the protien/carb ratio stuff and it tastes pretty good too.

Indygreg couldn't be more right. Everyone is loyal to their product of choice and everybody is different (goals, etc). Im like you, its gotta taste good. I recently have been using BNC's Syntha - 6 (http://store.bsnonline.net/detail/syntha6.html) It has six different protiens that each support muscle recovery at different lengths of time. Plus it taste good mix with just about anything- your chocolate soy milk would probably be perfect. It also contains fat and carbs and good post-workout nutrients so it's well balanced, not strickly whole whey.

Thanks to everyone who recommended the Muscle Milk. I ordered a jar of the Cookies & Creme from amazon and used the Subscribe & Save (no commitment) to save an extra 15% off. It's actually a little TOO thick for me in my Whole Foods soy milk (maybe mixing it with rice milk, which is normally thinner, might be better), but mixed with just plain water it really does taste pretty milkshakey. It's a bit sweet but definitely tasty. I just did a pretty hard strength workout - I'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Wal-mart has there own cheapo brand protein powder its 34$ for a giant tub of 54 gram per serving protein powder which when mixed with milk and peanut butter and a banana makes for a very filling 400 calorie 54g protein and 20g carbohydrate recovery mix.  I really enjoy it and makes for a nice meal during an Ice bath.  After 40 minutes your ready for some pasta or whatever a real meal might include.  Hope this helps.
