Subject: Bike Repair Stands

I'm sick of a.) working on my bike while it's on the ground, and b.) hanging it from the basement ceiling with a rope to clean the drive train.  So, I'm investing in a work stand.  What should I look for in a work stand?  From my initial research prices range from $125 to $300+.  Of course, I'd like to be on the less expensive end of the spectrum, but I want to buy a stand I'll keep forever and that is easy to use.

What do you have?  What do you like about it?  Dislike?

TIA.

Honestly,  I built one myself for around $40 with items from Home depot.  I basically used 2X4's to make a base and then used galvanized pipes for the riser and support arms.   Then I wrap towels around the pipe to set the bike on.  Works pretty well but not perfect but the price was right.

Someone earlier on BT provided links for a DIY bike stand made of PVC pipes.

Park Tools has some cheap stand models. I picked up mine for around $100 new (PCS-1 I think) You may be able to get some good deals locally of Craigslist. It's a good all-around stand. Collapses flat for easy storage and has adjustable top tube clamp so you can use it on a variety of bike models and still have the bike remain snug while working on it.

Build your own w/ PVC.  Thats the cheapest possible.

Those are cool.  I espically the like the pvc stand but seems it would be hard to store unless you took it apart everytime.  The Galvanized pipe is simiar to mine but I have to arm rest.  Never thought of the clamp.  I did think about mounting it to a wall like the third one but like to be able to move it around.

I've got the basic stand from Performance Bike, and it works really well.  It is very stable, and is adjustable in every axis I can think of.  As an added bonus, most of the locks are the same quick release style locks as what you've got on your bike.  I haven't had a single one loosen or give way while working on a bike (or at all, for that matter).

According to their website, they're normally $219.99, but they're on sale right now for $159.99.  That's about what I paid for it, and it's been well worth the money!!

Actually...if you order today, you get an extra 20% off because it's over $100...that brings the price down to $127.99. I'm tempted to order one myself at that price.
