Subject: IM Registration going online only from IMKY onward (for all races)

Just got this interesting email from a friend. In the IMLou thread there was discussion that 2009 IMLou will be online only, but this email indicates that ALL races will be that way.

It will be interesting to see what this does for Volunteering.  I read they turned folks away at Placid. I assume most volunteer at an IM to be onsite for registration the next day (and in the last year, volunteers got preferential treatment during registration so it was an additional bonus).

All,

Kevin emailed Chris and I to let us know that his KY IM packet claims that there in NO onsite registration this year!!!!

I called WTC
World Triathlon Corporation
43309 US Highway 19 North
Tarpon Springs, FL 34689
(727) 942-4767 Phone

AND they confirmed that NO IM Event will have ANY onsite registration for ANYONE from now on (Paul - you are big-time lucky to get your spot in Placid!!)...including participants wanting to re-register or the volunteers (as they have done in the past).

I asked her why we have not seen any news on this major change and she said they are sending that out to the public very soon...they were waiting until it was positively going to happen.  Well...It is official.

For Chris and I, KY 2009 should be okay because it is only year 3 for this venue and it is not as popular as the others yet, but it is certainly still a risk that we will not get slots registering online at noon on 9/1.

Correction... This is for WTC events only... Lake Placid, Wisconin and other NAS events will not follow this rule. I just spoke with Ann @ WTC who gave me this information.

I have absolutely no data to back this up, but I would be extremely surprised if MOST volunteers at an IM are simply people wanting to sign up for next year.  These events have tremendous local support and I'm sure they can get enough volunteers that have never done a triathlon, let alone an IM.  Just my personal impression.

Which events are WTC and which are NAS?

Specifically, will IMFL have onsite registration?  Sorry if this is a dense question ...

My assumption was simply a sample size of 1 (IMFL last year).  You are probably correct.

Ironman KY & Hawaii are ( I think) the only WTC Events.

WI, Lake Placid, Canada, Arizona, FLA and CdL are all NAS sports.

Florida 70.3 & Cali 70.3 are also NAS events.

Oh well, I was excited for a minute since I am worried about getting into IMFL since I will NOT be on site, but I will go back to being frustrated again ...

Well this makes things a little bit easier for me. I was going to head to Florida to volunteer to be able to get a spot for next year, but now I can sit at home and the refresh button 1 million times until I'm able to sign up. Its going to be nuts from here on out. Active.com's website will be bombarded by 3000 plus people attempting to sign up for a single race. haha Good thing I have cable

Make sure you read all the comments.  IMFL is NAS and still will have onsite registration.

Yes, except the abbreviation for Coeur d'Alene is with an 'A' instead of an 'L'.

WTC has a few other events, but nothing in the 48 states so they're not really relevent here.  IMKY is the only race that's actually effected by this.  And it's not popular enough for this to actually make any difference.

So everything is exactly the same as it was yesterday.

Cool, so I can register for Kona online this year?  Cool, that's much easier than this qualifying junk
