Subject: Convert from 9 speed to 10 speed?

Hi, I am planning on purchasing a used 2005 Trek Equinox 9 as shown here:  http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/2005/archive/equinox9

If I ever wanted to upgrade the 9 speeds in the back to 10 speed, what would have to be done?  Is it affordable and is it worth the cost to do it?

 Thanks,

-Nick

I agree that it's not worth it. However, you could use a 10 speed cassette and a 9 speed shifter and rear derailleur. You will not be able to use the index , but will have to operate in 'manual' mode. You would also be better off switching to a 10 speed chain.

Not worth it. 9 speed vs. 10 speed doesn't make you faster. 9 speed is still widely available if anything wears out.

As mentioned, its shifter, cassette, and chain.

However, I just happen to have a 2004 Eq9 that is for sale.  Already ten speed too.

Its currently on eBay, but I'd take it down to sell to a BT'er.

PM me if you'd like the link.  Its a 56 and has several upgrades over a stock model.
