Subject: Two Triathlons in Two Weeks?

Hi Everyone.

I am training for my first triathlon...an Olympic distance on August 17th. I am naturally quite a bit nervous about the race so I am considering signing-up for a Sprint (actually 1/2 Mile Swim 23 Mile Bike 4 Mile Run). It gives me 8 days to recover & I would be doing a Brick on that weekend anyway. Any thoughts?

I have no idea what shape you are in.

But

As long as you don't tweak something or cramp on the first race you will most likely be fine.

I also would not put forth maximum effort during the sprint. Save it for the Oly. Use the sprint to see where you need to work the next week. I did two races about two weeks apart and used the first one as a "run through" for my A race. I learned a lot especially setting up my transition area.

I would definitely do the sprint. I even think that you would be fine putting in a good hard effort during it as well. I came from a running background, and after doing a marathon felt totally shredded for atleast 5 days. I have never felt that way after a tri. in fact, most of the times I am barely even sore the next day. Maybe don't kill yourself, but definitely give it a good effort. A successful sprint will go a long way to calming your nerves and giving you confidence.

It's hard to say, as you haven't logged your training, and we don't know your age. If you've been following something close to one of the BT Oly plans, the sprint should be a good way to get the race feeling going and find out what to focus on for the Oly. I did two in two weeks in June, although the Oly was first. I went hard in the Oly and felt like had plenty left for the sprint, although my legs were pretty gassed after the second race.

Your sprint is showing distances that are closer to an Oly. This will give you a good indication of what shape you're in. If you take it easy, and feel great, then eight days is fine for recovery. If you have difficulty doing the sprint, then you'll have difficulty with the Oly the following week.

I say go for it. I am new to triathlons this year and didn't have a background in any of the disciplines. Years ago (I'm 35 now) I used to play baseball and lifted a ton of weights.

Anyway to answer your question, I ran 2 olympic races back to back. Although I was tired during the second race I was able to complete both relatively easily. I was definitely more tired after the second race but nothing too bad. I will say the second race took me 15 minutes longer for a couple of reasons:

1. wetsuits were not legal in the second race (water temp was 81) I did wear a wetsuit in the first race.
2. bike course was more difficult during the 2nd race -- significant uphill.
3. very hot during the second race --upper 80's!

Have fun during both races.

Thanks everyone...I'm going to go ahead & run both races: FitCity Triathlon in Collierville, TN on August 9th & Falls Creek Falls Olympic on August 17.

As long as you're in reasonable shape, 8 days is more than enough to recover. We're talking a Sprint 8 days before an Oly, so I really see no reason for you not to do it.

In the past 2 months have completed 4 Sprints Tri's (2 weeks apart from each other). I can say this much, after my 3rd I had a bout with burn out. I had to take a few days off for recovery (no legs). However the time off was well needed. I raced this past weekend (NJ State Tri) and had a great race; finished 2 min under my goal of 1:30, I feel it was due to the time I took off. With that said if your base training is there you should not have any problems. Just make sure you tapper and listing to your body, it will tell you when you need a rest.
