I admit it, I'm a nerd. That being said:

I mapped out the route using veloroutes.org.

Here's the link.

You can check out the elevation on that map by clicking on the "get elevation" link at the top...

Not much elevation there, at all...

It's a flat swim, bike, and run.  The hardest part of the bike course is the turns.  There are a bunch and they are the 90 degree type.  Since it is flat you build up a lot of speed and then, brake, brake, crap I'm coming in hot...  You get the picture.   This is a really nice race.  It is small enough that it isn't crowded, but big enough to see some friends.

I saw what tridood mapped, it looks like there are a few 180's in there, this isn't gonna be lots of fun having to turn on a dime like that. But in any case, can't wait.

Say, is anybody doning the Peachetree City race in two weeks as well?

I signed up last week...my 1st triathlon!

I will be on a red dual-suspension mountain bike with street tires.  Look towards the back of the pack

Looking forward to this experience...I plan on going slow and enjoying the race.

Hehe, well, I don't plan on going slow, but my MTB (with street tires as well) and me will probably be BOP anyways!

Good luck on your first tri!

I just received the GA VET Tri email with last minute notices, reminder or rules, etc

1: Make sure your handle bar ends are SOLIDLY plugged, or you'll be DQ

2: Abide by USAT rules: They specifically cite the No Drafting Rule, and will DQ if you do...

3: Packet Pickup:

Packet Pick – Up and Registration

Packet Pick – Up and Registration will be held in the Lobby of the Lake Blackshear Resort on Friday, August 15, 2008 from 2:00pm – 6:00pm.

Packet Pick – Up and Registration will be available race morning from 6:00am to 7:30am

Good luck...

Yep.  I was in wave 2 also.  You definately had to fight for your own space!

Man, memorable for me:

I was in wave 1, along with those two that took off too early! I think they got DQ!

I took a foot to the right eye...hard! I almost lost my goggles!

We also had a father/son duo doing the duathlon. That was neat.

I'll post my race report after I the results are posted.

Fun race, though!

Me? nah.  I do swim differently when it is crowded like that.  When I feel boxed in on the sides I swim with my elbows out to take up more space.  Also, when I feel someone starting to try to swim up my legs I increase the tempo of my kick.  I don't kick the other person, but the increased motion generally gets them to go around instead of over.

I thought the event was overall fairly well-organized, but being my 1st tri I didn't know what to expect.

I was surpised they didn't do a tech inspection on the bikes, but that my POV coming from motorcycle road racetrack experience....bad tire pressure, bad brakes, etc. on a technical course like that = dangerous.  Is it normal to not inspect the bikes before the race?

Being a 1st timer, I had no expectation on the density of the swim wave (I was #2) but it seemed packed because of the narrow starting space.  I went in by the weeds way to the left outside, and did a steady forward crawl.  I had ppl around me but no kicking etc. so I am assuming I took an "un-competitive" line.

By the time I got to the 4th buoy there were like 4-5 guys hanging off it, I thought maybe it was a floating tiki bar or something   Around that point, I started getting passed by some fast wave 3 swimmers...I knew I was going slow and took a wide line, but didn't know I was *that* slow hehe.

When I wasn't running or biking, the bugs were insane...so bad that after the race I got my 3500 calorie BBQ and cookie plate and retreated inside the lobby.

I would definately do this again next year, it was a lot of fun!  Already looking for a place to do my 2nd tri

 Hope everyone else had fun...!

how about that snake right before the swim? that was interesting. one of the gang grabbed it by the head and took it off for some ritual slaying before the race.

i got my helmet dq'd before the race. so much for buying a fancy european one.....

see you in valdosta sept 6? Laughing

Had a great time. This race has really grown over the last 3 years. You can really see how triathlon is becoming popular.

Did I miss out on the goody bag? Also, I didnt see the event on www.birdseyeview.com which is the photo site for gamultisports events. No pictures either......??.......bummer. Still a good event.

Man, that was a fast bike course! I averaged 18.28mph on my MTB!  I even had the pleasure of passing some guys on really nice bikes! Hehehe. Now, I just need a good tri or road bike!

Had fun out there! I didn't expect there to be over 300 triathletes!

Hey, thanks for the link to the results.  I just found this thread after doing the race Saturday, my first Tri.  I have been lurking on BT for a few weeks now getting ready for my first Tri and it has been a great site to get me prepared.

I thought the event setup was great but don't have much to compare it to.  I too was in Wave 2 and by the time I got to the Tiki Bar was wondering if I would even make it to the 2nd turn.  No way you can prepare in a pool for a real live group swim like that!!  Next time I will go way wide even if I have to swim an extra 100 yards - that would have been better than getting hammered every other stroke.  Regarding the gnats - it reminded my why I moved north of the Gnat Line 25 years ago!!  Had a great experience and beat my time goal by about 8 minutes - I guess I need to buy a better bike ?!?! (yeah that's my excuse and I;m sticking to it :-)).

When I got home I tried to sign up fpr Peachtree City but it was already closed.  Maybe Emerald Point/Lake Lanier on Oct 5 - will it be too cold then to swim without a wet suit?

Thanks, MM

I was planning on doing the Lake Lanier Emerald Pointe Tri, but since my nephew wants to do a race with me, I decided to change it over to the Douglasville Last Chance Tri, which will be done in a pool.

BTW, it's the same day as the Lanier tri.
