Subject: please help: places to run in Chantilly

Hey VA residents,

I'm working in Chantilly for the next two months. I am in the middle of marathon training and I can't take running inside my hotel's crappy little exercise room... I will flip out and stab someone if I have to do that. Or, just not run.

Can you please give me some areas/parks/trails that are good for running? Thanks a lot!! (I'm staying at 28 & 50- doesn't seem like there are any continuous sidewalks around or I'd just leave from my hotel)

The W&OD trail is probably about 5 miles from 28 & 50... it's a 43 mile multi-use trail that is relatively flat. You could drive to where the trail intersects 28 and go from there.

You can also run at Burke Lake. It's a 4.7 mile loop of a dirt trail. Beautiful and safe.

You just have to pay to get in since you're not a Fairfax County resident.

Or if you are like me and still have NY tags and license, you can just say "Um, I live here, but they won't let me change my tags (which is actually true)" and they let you in for free

Its kinda boring, but running on the trail along the Fairfax County Parkway is an option as well. If you park in the Fairlakes area there's some little trails that feed into it as well.

I work in Chantilly (28 and 50 too) and have gone up to Reston for training after work and found that there are some nice neighborhoods up from Centerville Rd, then a right on Franklin Farms.  If you can find a stretch of road, or combination thereof, there that's sidewalked or runnable, you might find it decent and a bit scenic (as suburbia gets). It's probably a short drive out to see if they are and not as far away as some other options are.

Other than that you can look into Chantilly HS for their track there (off Stringfellow) if they have one.  I'm not familiar with the area there that much but those would be my suggestions locally, but I do believe your options are limited around there though.

Otherwise the other suggestions in this thread are your best bet.  Keep in mind the C&O Canal http://www.bikewashington.org/canal/ and the WO&D Trail http://www.wodfriends.org/map1.html probably have the longest stretch of paved path and trail, respectively, around that are pedestrian friendly and widely used.

Good luck, enjoy the area, and welcome!

Harry
