Master 1741 Chapel Hill, NC | Subject: no more snot nose, yeah!!!! Over two years ago, I bought a book entitled Bicycling Magazine's 1000 All Time Best Tips. When I read it back then, I flagged a page that talks about getting a runny nose when cycling. Page 100, tip #46. It says that this problem is caused by Vasomotor Rhinitis, and a prescription nasal spray called Atrovent, generic name of ipratropium can help. I finally went to the doctor and remembered to ask about this. He gave me an Rx and I tried it today. OMG. It works. It's a miracle cure. I rode for 2 whole hours without wiping snot off my nose and onto the back of my shorts. What a joy to ride without that huge annoyance. Why did I wait two years to ask the doctor about this? Rx cost $7 with insurance. $30 without, still well worth it! I also have this snot nose problem while running, so am going to use the spray prior to bike and run workouts. I am rereading that little book, and it's even better the second time around. |

I thought either a) everyone had to deal with this, and I was the only one complaining or b) I was the only one that had to deal with this! Now I know I'm not crazy!! I'm booking an appointment tomorrow! |

Master 2491 | Subject: RE: no more snot nose, yeah!!!! I have this problem also, but snot rockets and the occasional wipe on my shirt works for me, but I'm just a lowly, knuckle-dragging male. So will that stuff also work when you have a cold? |

Master 1887 Loveland, Ohio | Subject: RE: no more snot nose, yeah!!!! I'm new at this (1 tri under my belt) and I've only done 12.5 hours and 130 miles of biking so far. Nine times out of ten, my nose will run. I'm making a kleenex a part of my gotta haves because it's such a problem. Usually, if I can clean up what's already run, it doesn't come back. But, then again, I'm only riding for about an hour right now, and as my times increase, I might have another episode. So, not only am I glad to know it's not just me, but that there's medicine for it! Thanks for sharing! - Lora |

I don't know what it is this summer, but I'm the king of the farmer blow throughout all my runs this year. Got stuck running on the treadmill all week, which for some reason, doesn't give me a snot nose. Finally got outside and did an 8 mile run today. YES, YES, YES - it works for running too!!! Didn't wipe my nose once Still working for biking, as well! My doctor said I could use it as prescribed (2 sprays in each nostril 3x per day), or just before workouts. I am using it just before workouts...it takes about 20 minutes to take effect. It seems to help my stuffy nose all day. |

Just wondering. This Rx has the same possible side effects as almost all of the allergy/rhinitis meds.... episitaxis (nose bleeds) and viral pharyngitis (throat infection). Very safe med overall. I have written prescriptions for this but I haven't thought of using it myself...dang! Gotta try it 'cuz I suffer badly while running and riding |

I guess if you keep usage to a minimum you keep the risk of side effects down too. I'm thinking of using it mostly in races (and a few times in training to try it out). I'm a big fan of the Neti Pot for daily use. Helps to a degree. The Wikipedia article on Vasomotor rhinitis mentions it too. |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: no more snot nose, yeah!!!! Not sure why everyone has to "cure" everything nowadays. But if it is something that was causing a detriment to your performance than I can understand trying to remedy it. But does a running nose really slow you down??? Whatever floats your boat. But I'm of the mentality that nothing needs to go into my body to "fix" something unless it is a medical emergency. Your results/mileage may vary. |

But this "running nose" thing does bother me to a degree where I'll take meds I would never consider otherwise. I blow so many snot rockets that I can't do group rides, I have to come out of aero too much (for the big ones, yuck, I know), have to waste time during a run race to go off to the side... on bad days about every 2 minutes! Summer or winter. I've had my doc rule out allergies or sinus infection. It's just an oversensitive nose/sinus area (smoking for 12 years didn't help but I already had it to a degree when I started at 30). Any breeze or slight change of temps brings it on. Any time of day, anywhere I am, whatever I do. But training makes it even worse. Yes, it's that bad. Some of my training buddies have made gross-out facial expressions behind my back, I know it! I also also agree with the above two posts. Skip the meds. But I can definitely relate to what you're talking about. I deal with that same sensitivity due to those conditions as well. I also hate having clogged nostrils while training - because breathing through my nose helps me control my pace and effort. I am actually considering having my nostrils waxed , but I have heard you can breath unbelievably better after it's done. And when you have blow your shnoz all the time like me, the pain might be worth the reward. |
