Subject: Anyone else doing the Savannah century?
Although I have only been cycling for around 3 months, I really want to attempt a century. My longest ride has only been about 60 miles (although I did another 25-30 that day) and I think I can handle this at 103 miles. Anyone else going to attempt it or have done it in the past? I believe they have a 30-something mile ride on Saturday Aug. 30 (day before the century) and you can also try a metric century and other distances if you don't want to do the entire 103 miles.

I have a question, I have never really seen a century take place, but is it okay to use a tri/tt bike for it? It is the only bike I have (other than a mtn bike). Do other people use tt/tri bikes? Is it safe to use one because I think there are going to be quite a lot of people participating.

Thanks.

Sure. You won't see a ton of tri bikes, but you will see some. ANd even more road bikes with clip-ons.

Plenty of people on tri bikes and road bikes with clip ons.  Lots of peeps doing IM's use these as training rides.  If you're in a paceline or drafting though just stay out of your aero bars and you'll be as safe as those on a road bike.  When drafting or riding in a paceline/peleton you need to have the ability to brake on a moment's notice.

I am likely doing it....many of my friends here have done the ride. Be prepared for a hot, hot, ride. (duh, it's South Georgia in August)... There is a funny (retrospectively) story involving a friend of mine on that ride. It was so hot, he got dehydrated, delerious, and was riding rather aimlessly when another group of my friends picked him up...to hear him tell it is a great laugh....from what my friends here say, it is a good ride...

Well, just two days away. Anyone else plan on doing it? I would also like to know how many people usually show up, does anyone know? Or does anyone know how many people did it last year? Just curious on what to expect...

Well, I did it, and what an experience it was. I finished in about 6 hrs 20-25 minutes. The last 10-15 miles really killed me, otherwise I would have broken 6 hours. Although, if you want to get technical, that time was with rest stops. I stopped at four of the seven rest stops. My official time on the bike was 5:44:17. Distance according to my computer was 101.57 miles. My avg. speed was 17.6 mph and max was 36.4 mph. Overall, I would say it was pretty decent. Plenty of stops and support, friendly people. One thing that I didn't get was, if they weren't going to get results/post peoples times, then why did we get a race number to wear? Hmmm...?
