HOWEVER, have you seen most "teen" movies out there?  Come on - most high schoolers are played by 20 somethings in LOTS of films.  I can look past it.  But they better hurry up and film the last two in a hurry and be done with them.

Exactly. At least these kids are pretty close to the correct age.

And it used to be lot worse - we watch the original Blob movie every year at the Blobfest in Phoenixville (where it was filmed).  Steve McQueen was 28 when he played a 16 year old!!!

Slugger - 2008-07-31 5:31 AM Peter Jackson did JRRT's work the absolute justice it deserved. He HAD to cut stuff, yet even still, manage to at least get in references to almost everything. Plus, LOTR movies could be followed without ever having read the book, and you would get no major surprises once you read the book (okay, kinda sorta except the ending). PJ capture the spirit of Middle Earth, something very few directors could ever dream of achieving, much less execute as well as he and the crew did. I have not yet seen ONE Potter movie that came anywhere close to the genius of Peter Jackson. All that said, what I would love, love, LOVE to happen is for Rowling to rewrite all of the books. She essentially did a very large, very well publicized first novel that the whole world got to read as she wrote them. She had HUGE pressures all around. I threw down book six in absolute disgust at one point. She is a FAR better writer and storyteller than what she managed in that book. She set much higher standards for herself in the first several, which she could write, rewrite, edit, and reedit in peace. I think it would be absolutely awesome for her to consider all seven of the published works first drafts, and go back and clean them all up. Not change the story substantially, but find all the crappy passages and rework them into what she is capable of producing. And she has said fairly unequivocally (from what I've heard, which is not straight from her) that she is utterly and completely done with Harry and ready to move on.

I could not agree more with everything you wrote! I got flamed several months ago for suggesting most of the HP books read like drafts and not finished books.

As for PJ and LOTR, right on. But what the heck did he do with King Kong?  AWFUL!!!

So we all know that the last book will actually be split into two movies to solve the dilema of trying to cram too much into one movie.  It will be filmed all at the same time, but will be edited into two different movies and will be released months apart from each other.

Every time i see the title of this book, it reminds me of the Family Guy where Peter writes porn stories, including "Harry Potter and the Half-Black Chick."

Just wanted to chime in that I am a total Harry Potter dork too.  My bike is a Nimbus 2000.  I agree about missing Peeves in the movies. After I read about the death party for Headless Nick where he chases Moaning Mertle out of the room yelling, "pimples, pimples pimples"  I died with laughter. I was so sad that seen did not make it into the movie!

The Deathly Hallows will be shot as two movies and at the same time ....... they are already doing screenplay stuff as they will roll right into the next one.

The thing about LOTR that makes it unique is not only was it shot all at once, but it was also shot almost all in sequence for the first unit group.  That is almost unheard of in film making.  What sucks is that The Hobbit will ALSO be split into two movies ...... just more to wait and anticipate I guess.

But by splitting TDH and The Hobbit into 2 flicks each, they will be able to capture a lot more of the content.

OOTP was a lot more introspective and emotional stuff, which is hard to portray in a film but I agree that it is one of my least liked of the HP movies.

My problem with the latest movie is not that it doesn't mirror the book. I'm ok with that, I go in knowing that they are 2 separate entities and things will be cut. My problem with the latest movie is it sucked. Hermione can't act at all! She sped through every last line like they were trying to make every nanosecond count. Pretty much all of them stunk. They easily could have cut out half of the scenes and made the ones they kept good and more detailed. Instead they smooshed everything they could into a crappy movie.

I did watch the trailer for the next one. And it does look good. I just don't know if I can handle another really bad movie after the last one

I love the Nimbus 2000 bike name! My bike is named Felix, after the Felix Felicous potion - just a swig of little Felix here and you'll be lucky all day! But, I wish I had thought of the Nimbus name, or Firebolt - that would have been a great one

Funny you mention The Hobbit as I just finished re-reading it for the umpteenth time last night.  I can totally see it split in two.  I'm thinking from when they escape from the Wood Elves and get taken in with the Lake Men.  What do you think?

Sorry, maybe I should start a new thread on this so as not to hijack the OP.  Then again, where do you see the split in TDH?

I, too, have gotten flamed. Don't care, no I don't! (You heard the Smeagol voice, yes?)

Ah, never saw King Kong. BUT, don't forget that PJ was a B-movie director on purpose and he wanted to do King Kong as the B-movie it always was. LOTR was actually waaaay out of line from his other stuff.

If you want, I can point you to an entire BB of Tolkien (and PJ) fans...

That makes sense.  It is before they meet Bard and the Lakemen and that still leaves the whole episode with Smog and the battle.

But maybe to keep in line with LOTR he would stop it after Bilbo escapes from Golem and the goblins.

I would think that they would probably split TDH somewhere around when Ron returns and they destroy the amulet.  Plenty of action up until that point to keep everyone occupied but before they get to the Malfoys and rescue Luna and Ollivander.  Although that might be a good place as well when they get to Bill and Fleur's.  The only problem with that is Harry will have figured out where the last two horcruxes are as well as understanding all about the Hallows.

Thinking of that .... actually they could do it after the episode with Lovegood when he explains the Hallows and they escape from there!

(I just re-read TDH on my trip to IMLP using it to help relax before and recover after the race).

To help further derail this discussion, did anyone else see Heavenly Creatures? One of my favorites, and based on a true story.  After it came out, Ann Perry was "outed" as one of the girls, which completely creeped out my daughter (who up to that point had read quite a bit of Perry).  She even wrote a song with the chorus "Ann Perry, you scare me".

True confessions - never seen King Kong (either version!). I was just sayin' that he wanted to make it "bad" the way a Certain Someone should have done with Star Wars...

I think splitting TDH at Ron destroying the amulet would be a good spot, but I can't remember exactly what goes on before and after that. It was definitely a big turning point in the book, from "Can they/they HAVE to!!" to "Phew, they will, now how??"

Before Ron comes back they escape from Nagini and LVM in Godric's Hollow, which would be a pretty exciting "ending" to the first movie.

The only thing about Ron coming back is that it is not all that "exciting" of a scene that you could end a movie on.

That's why I threw the Xeniophelias Lovegood scene out there because they get hunted down by some death eaters and escape with dramatic flare.  And from an understanding point in the book it is pretty good.  But it may be too far along in the story to get another solid 2-1/2 hour movie out of afterwards.

We'll see in a few months!

HPANA has a good sort of frame by frame analysis of the trailer and even pulled out some shots like a picture of Greyback and also Dumbledore getting AK'ed.
