What is with this outbreak of cryptosporidium in the DFW area?? I don't understand how its spreading across the metroplex since none of the pools are connected. Has anyone had their pool affected by it? I'm kinda scared to go swim

From what I heard on the news. the outbreak started in Berger lake and spread from there.  I guess all it takes is one infected person to start the chain.  I heard all "Y"'s were closing their pools to hyperchlorinate them.

My wife came up with quite the astute hypothosis.  Since the folks became sick from the Burger's Lake outbreak, many pools have been specifically testing for Crypto. . .   Though some of these other pools have tested positive for Crypto, the levels might not be high enough in order to make folks sick.  So it might be that various pools would have tested positive for Crypto in the past, and people might not have gotten sick from it.  Also some folks might have become sick with Crypto, but a mis-diagnosis might not have pointed to Crypto, but a bad meal the night before.

Since a number of people came down with the symptoms at the same time, the epidmiologists were able to make a proper diagnosis, and identify the source.  Once the public and media became aware, the testing of other pools began, and evidence of Crypto were found in some of these pools.  And, at that point proper diagnosies were made on other people with the symptoms.

This hypothosis might be right, or it might be wrong. . .   But, its wierd how we're seeing this all of a sudden. . . .

I went to the Duncanville High School Natatorium this past Wed. night for my swim and they had a sign posted declaring their closing for temporary maintenance. I will call before I go from now on! I was really looking forward to 3000 meters of cool water to beat the heat!

It was in the National news as well.  The biggest issue is that crypto is not killed by chlorine because it has a hard outer shell.  Ultraviolet light and chlorine dioxide will do the trick but these systems are expensive for most public pools to afford.

Scary!

My daughter, who was 3 at the time, had it for about 4 weeks before it was properly diagnosed! It is a nasty bug, and she lost about 5 pounds between the vomiting and diarreah. Thankfully, no one else in the house got it....that would have been one ridiculous mess! The diagnosis finally came after they had to do stool samples and find the bug. At first it was "something she ate", "virus", etc. We had been swimming at our local pool, and after 3 other people where diagnosed, they found it in 3 other local pools as well! Needless to say, they closed the pools and did some serious treatments on it. My daughter was fine after 3 days on a "super drug" type of antibiotic. Apparently it is the only one that is able to kill the bug for good....and of course was very $$$. But at least she is better!

I can only hope they will be hyper-chlorinating the natatorium I swim at. I hope it's tonight. So when I try to go swim they turn me away.
