Subject: Riding in/near DC (Navy Yard)
I'm in town for a few days for business and I want to get a ride in either Mon or Tue.  I'm staying down by the Navy Yard which isn't exactly the best neighborhood and the roads really suck so I'm happy to drive a bit but I'd prefer to minimize time in the car.  Can someone suggest a place to get out and ride maybe 30 miles without a lot of interruptions?

check out bikewashington.org BUT I think you should be able to pick-up the Custis trail and that then connects to the W&OD trail....I know a guy that lives on Capital Hill and rides into work at Tysons Corner via the Custis to W&OD---he says lots of options out of DC (he's the one that pointed me to bikewashington.org for the trail maps, etc.....)

Hains Point is probably the best bet for interrupted riding. You can choose either a 3 mile or 6 mile loop.

30 miles uninterrupted is pretty tough around here.  As Shelly pointed out haines point you can ride uninterrupted but will be doing quite a few laps to get in 30 miles.

Nice thing is you can take the metro there with your bike and head out of the city into MD or VA.  In Arlington you can catch the W&OD trail which does cross quite a few roads at certain points but will give you plently of trail to ride heading out to the west.

 Interrupted?

.. The question is do you want to ride trails or roads for the 30 or so miles?

Ditto - you can definitely get 30 miles of trail in DC - in fact, you can get 100 miles I did a century ride that was almost all on trails - if you can make it down to Haines Pointe, you can definitely get in the trail mileage. But that's trail riding, and most people (except for pusses like me) hate trails. Only other suggestion is if you can get to Rock Creek Park - that's all road riding, going through the park and out on Beach Drive. It's not particularly challenging riding, but it's still roads and not trails. You still have to stop at intersections, though. The pitfall of living in an urban area.

Also alot of it depends on what day of the week you ride and what time.

I ride up McArthur all the time on the weekend in the early morning.  Probably wouldn't want to do that on a Tuesday at 5:00pm.

Shoot me a PM if you want to go for a ride on Tuesday, my ego should have recovered by then to hop back on the bike.

A friend suggested Potomac Park which was only about 2 miles from my hotel...is that the same as Hains Point?  Anyway, it was perfect for what I really wanted to do.  I just did loops but it worked well since I was doing threshold intervals.  I think I ended up doing 8 loops and then ran a loop+.  Now I have to find a 50m pool for a swim tomorrow...

Yes.. same place.. east potomac park golf course in the middle, potomac on three sides. And good for you there is a 50m outdoor pool in the same place. Never been.. shelly123 swam there.. supposedly DC resident pool, but never check ID since she was never a dc res.

No $hit!? A 50m pool right there?  That rocks!  Is it over by the tennis courts near the entrance?

It's a pretty decent pool, actually, considering it's in the middle of a city. I've done a couple "training" triathlons there with friends - we lock the bikes to the rack outside, swim, go and do some loops of Haines Pointe on the bike and then run a loop. A lot of folks do that, I think.

I didn't make it to the pool yesterday...too tired after a day in training workshops for work and I had to meet friends for dinner early.  That's a really cool set-up though!  A great loop to ride/run with a 50m pool.  I'd be there every week if I lived in DC.
