Hi, all! I signed up for my first triathlon a few weeks ago and have been training in a vacuum. Then, I found this site. It's great to see that there are so many other people out there training too!

I'm 38, and before this, the biggest physical challenges I've taken on have been riding a century two summers ago and going through the Houston Police Department's 6-month police academy about five years ago. I had back surgery shortly after moving to Chicago in 1999, and I did the first swimming I've done as an adult during my recuperation. I've always loved biking and have done 5k's here and there over the years, so it's definitely the swimming that's my weakest area. Doing the three exercises in succession also seems like a real challenge. My goals are to improve my swimming, develop enough endurance to put everything together, and get faster (I'm definitely in the plodding along stages!).

I'm signed up for the Reebok Women's Triathlon in Naperville in July.

WOW.... i thought i was bad with a neck/back injury... but back surgery. Kudos to you- i've been rehabbing my neck/back for the past 18 months w/o any tri's in between. I really do think you are brave for having the will to set such an awesome goal. If you have any questions, this is definately the place for answers, support and motivation. This site is the reason that I'm still training- I take it one step at a time with the hopes of the Danskins on July 11th [wis.].

Lots of luck and welcome!

The century was amazing! I made two big mistakes, though. I didn't do any training to prepare other than my usual rides, and I assumed the "gently rolling hills" the brochure talked about were more gentle than rolling. Not! Next time, I would map out a solid training program ahead of time (and follow it), and I'd check out the course beforehand. I definitely had fun, though! Good luck with yours!

Hi! I have one mini indoor triathlon planned for mid March. I thought it would be a good way to help me see what the whole process will be like before the real thing. That's it though, for now.

What kind of problems are you having with your neck/back? I think the surgery route can sometimes end up being quicker to recover from than not having surgery. I go to a chiropractor now, just to keep everything tuned up, and that helps me A LOT. If you haven't tried a chiropractor and can find a good one in your area, I highly recommend going. I have to admit that I was really skeptical about chiropractic treatment at first, but now I'm a real believer. Since I've been going to my chiropractor, I've been able to reduce the medication I was still on for my back by half! He's even been able to help me with random things like shin splints (although that's not the correct term anymore, but I can't ever remember what is).

Welcome Melinda - If you get a chance try one of the Total Immersion swim workshops in Chicago. Swim was my weakest event - I did a workshop in February - there's another one in Chicago - I think march 13th or so. You can check it out at: http://www.totalimmersion.net It transformed my ideas about swim.

Good luck and hang in. Understand - "been bit" - what a wonderful crazy - huh?

Wow, thanks for the great info! I will check this out for sure.

"Been bit" actually started from the fact that I do agitation for person protection dog training (i.e., I wear a bite suit and let dogs chomp on me.) I'm getting the feeling it's taking on a new meaning, though, as in "been bit by the triathlon bug"!

"Agitation training" - hmmm I think I may need a "bite suit" - I've been accused of being an "agitator."
