I like out and back.  This fights boredom and almost eliminates the desire to cut the ride or run short at the end of a loop.

Out and back or one large loop is my preference as I prefer scenery changes and not being able to cut short easily. Of course if I'm on call I have to stick to multiple smaller loops so I can be close to a computer.

I prefer loops even for the shorter runs and rides. It's just more interesting.

The problem I've found with out-and-backs in Florida is the wind.  Knowing that you are in a headwind for 35 miles is simply demoralizing.  Then have it flip on you just as you are reaching your turn-around and it is downright insanity-inducing.

With a loop you know that your headwind will, at least, become a crosswind soon.

Hmmm...apparently the mtns didn't get that memo. Seems like no matter which ride I do out here (loop, out-and-back), I have the wind in my face

I tend to do loops when running and out-and-backs when biking. I'd probably do more bike loops, but that would put in more flat land and stop signs.

I have always preferred loops. I think I actually dislike out and backs come to think about it. Oh, except for OWS, than I prefer out and back.

I tend to like loops, as on out-and-backs I tend to mentally fatigue easier. Also, I have issues in my area with unsafe running areas (i.e. lack of sidewalks and lots of traffic), so I have to repeat loops in the safe running areas. Actually, I did a 9 mile run last Friday on a .75 mile loop. For biking, I drive to a state park that has a 8.5 mile loop.

I used to be a dedicated out-and-backer, for many of the reasons mentioned here.  But now I'm dealing with recovering from a knee injury/surgeries and I've been forced to run a lot of loops, especially for long runs, where I need to be able to bail if things aren't going right.

On the other hand, I travel a lot, and although small loops are safer in unknown places, I just can't resist going out and back in a strange place.  This often results in something more akin to out and "OK, now HOW do I get back???".  This is not necessarily a recommended plan.  Earlier this summer, I set out for a run in Seoul and got lost, was unable to read street signs, and ended up running much further than I should have in such hilly terrain.  I had to take the next few days off to recover.

I hear ya on that one!  That stupid head wind can be killer.

I generally prefer loops  for varied scenery through the ride (can't run due to injury these days) but out and backs or partial out and backs are frequently on my schedule.

I hate out and back's.  I would much rather go in a circle than to stop and turn around.
