jonmetz - 2008-08-07 7:30 PM Speedplays are my choice for all of the reasons mentioned already. The walking/running in bike shoes is not an issue for me because my shoes remain clipped in at all times. You should learn to slip your feet into your shoes after mounting the bike out of T1 and slip out of your shoes and jump off the bike going into T2. This will save you transition time and makes the walking/running issue mute.

So, even with all the float, your shoes don't ever pop off when you're trying to get your foot out with leaving your shoe in? The reason I ask is because one time, coming to T2, my feet were on top of my shoes, and when I lifted my right leg over my saddle, to get ready to jump off my bike, my left foot, on top of the shoe, made my shoe pop off the pedal, and I almost ate it hard. I'm not sure if this is because I had too much float, or not enough float.. I use KEOs...

That is the beauty of speedplays...with the float it is harder for the shoe to pop out. I have never had a problem!

I am Kira's bf and would like to say ~ she's awesome!! A lot of people would have walked away from this sport after going through what shes been through! After every fall as upset as she gets, she gets back on her bike and fights off her fears! Shes the real deal and I'm impressed by her determination!! I just want to keep her safe out there because its dangerous enough, even if you feel comfortable clipping out - anything can happen, people just don't care about us!!

Thank you all for giving her help - I never used speedplays, so I can't give any advice.

I learned to ride on speedplays. I've had the same ones for 6 years now. I've never tried any other pedal system, so I don't have any helpful to say.  I will say, though, that I've never fallen off the bike, and I don't notice the float. I can't imagine what it's like to ride without float, actually. That sort of scares me. Sealed

If you are a bit nervous about clipless pedals, Speedplay do have the LightAction pedals, which are very easy to get out of (all Speedplays are easy to clip in to, just push downwards with a little ankle twist and you're in).

I recently switched from the X5's (similar to the Light Actions) to the Zero's and hated the Zero's. After a week on them it was a lot of work to get in/out of them.

I strongly suggest that anyone going to Speedplays start on the Light Actions or X5's. NOT the Zero's.

Otherwise, I love my Speedplays! Been riding them for 4 years!

PS - to the OP, I just read your other post about falling a lot with clipless pedals. DO NOT GET THE SPEEDPLAY ZERO'S. Seriously. They are hard pedals to get in and out of. I would not recommend those to newbies or to someone who is falling a lot. The Light Action Speedplays are what you should get.

Thank you KSH! ...I'm still on the fence about switching pedals ~ all these posts have been awesome, thank you!!!!!!  bf seems to think I'd do well in the Looks he has on his bike...so we might swap out his pedals, he'll take my old ones..and we'll see if that makes a difference...!

I have good experiences with Speedplay.  Im used to riding Time pedals on my MTB.  I mention this because there is a ton of float with them, like Speedplay.  I used Shimano on my road bike, but recently switched to Speedplay.  I prefer the speedplays much more.  As with anything new, clipping in or out will become automatic the more you do it.  I wouldn't let that be a determining factor.  Just remember to clip out on the bottom of your pedal stroke, and not the top.  You'll have much greater torque in the bottom of the stroke, and you'll also avoid more potential IT problems.

It really comes down to do you want more float in the pedal, and if your knees need it.

I switched to speedplay after developing severe IT problems.  I can't say how much or even if they helped with it, since I did a lot of other therapies to help.
