Subject: Why No Triathlon Bikes in the Olympics?
I've been on the NBCOlympics.com web site watching lots of great videos. I noticed that for the Olympic triathlon qualifying events and even the past two Olympics, the triathletes did not use TT bikes. They all were riding road bikes with aero bars. What am I missing? Are TT bikes not allowed in the Olympic triathlon? I realize the old argument "Which is faster, a road bike or a tri bike" will never end, but I was surprised that I didn't see even one TT bike. Maybe there were there and I just didn't see them. Can anyone clarify?

ITU rules... No TT bikes allowed.... and they can draft. Someone will post more about the rules I am sure.

There are definitely some triathlon bikes there; however ITU rules say that the bikes must be setup with drop bars, the aerobars cannot extend past the brake hoods, you can only use spoked wheels (no discs or Hed3's) along with a few other details.

The reason is that they are allowed to draft so the majority of riders will spend most of their time on the hoods or in the drops, except when pulling at the front, on a breakaway or they have fallen off the back at which point they will drop into the aero position.

Thanks! Makes sense now. It did look like the riders were riding on the hoods most of the time. Lots of standing up too. I am looking forward to watching the Tri events on NBC. If you haven't been to the NBC web site, it is really good.

ITU regs places limits on the design of a bike. ITU style racing more akin to a CRIT than a TT. Even if a TT bike was legal, it wouldn't necessarily be desirable because a road style bike is easier to handle in a group.

There really isn't any debate of what style is 'faster'. Which why a TT bike is preferred in a TT. Road bike are more versatile in regard to climbing, cornering and attacking which makes them a better choice for a road race.

I was posting in another thread how horrible the NBC website is. In order to watch the events live, you need a US zipcode, but when you put in a US zipcode a message appears that NBC has blocked the live video stream to all US zip codes.

Their "live" updates are about an hour behind the official olympic site.

Ha! I think NBC and it's website are a joke.

Perhaps others are having better luck, but NBC Sports has become a joke in sports programming.

Hmm... I'm having no problems watching the road race, and I'm even able to pull up the US women's soccer game, which is actually on TV as well.

It must just be because my IP Address is not in the US. I was able to watch it live streaming from the BBC and was online talking with a friend in the US, who was watching the road race on NBC. He said NBC was about 10 minutes behind what I was watching on BBC. I saw the ending and had to wait 10 minutes for his NBC coverage to finish to talk about the race so I wouldn't spoil it for him. NBC must be on a serious time delay.

Like I said, must be something in my settings that NBC has blocked. Luckily I can see other streaming videos.

Use a proxy server outside the US.  NBC and Microsoft are just trying to tick people off.  I couldn't even watch it on my linux/firefox pc without some effort.

so would drop bars be better on a tri bike for races (sprint and olympic) that have hills and corners...for long flat courses then the typical tri TT bars are better for aero.

Typically sprints and Olympics have riders that are bunched up...even without drafting you gain an aero advantage...

Just thinking outloud....
