I'm getting rolled onto a project in Richmond coming up in the next couple weeks that will keep me in Richmond from Monday - Thursday until December.  Anyone know of any local pools that I could just pay the daily rate?

Also, are there any good running routes and riding routes?

Thanks

What part of Richmond are you going to be in?

I usually run or ride on Westcreek Parkway.  It's a business park that has about a 5.5 mile loop.  Not a lot of traffic at night or on the weekends and lots of other runners and bikers.  I have some bike routes leaving from there, too.  Let me know if you want any.

As far as pools, there are a few YMCAs in the area.  There's also ACAC fitness that has a very nice pool, but I'm not sure if they have daily rates.

I'm not exactly sure, but signs point toward Chester.  I think that's south of Richmond?

Just remember if you hear banjo music and someone tells you, you got purdy lips, that you should probably run faster...

Yep.  Judi (zipp1) lives in that area and could probably tell you some runs and rides there.

Hi!  I  like to ride in Peters burg Battlefield from time to time.  It's a small loop (4 miles each way) but challenges the bike handling skills with the hills and strange turns.  Until recently I kept a small loop that I worked with, have recently ventured out on some other rides that are moderately hilly in Chester/Matoaca.  You can check out my logs and look for 25 miles of hills and the one I called to Matoaca (the second one is acually hillier than the first one but I was looking for a new way to label the routes).  Most of my running is from my house but Pocahontas State Park has some great trails.  It may also be a good place to ride but I haven't ridden there yet.   Don't know about day rate pools, best bet is to call a bunch of fitness centers, I swim at American Family in Colonial Heights.  We have a class set up similar to a Master's swim program, the coach is a certified VACS coach, he takes summers off from the gym since the kids program is full time then.  He'll be back early September but there are several of us meeting every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:45 AM to swim.

I live in Chester and do training at Pocahontas and Henricus park at Dutch Gap. Henricus has a nice 5 mile loop for trail running. It is pretty flat. The parking is free. You can bike the loop, but it is set up for a MTB. Pocahontas is a great place to run or MTB. The roads in the park and around the park are nice for training. It does cost $5 to park there, But you can buy a 1 year pass for $30. As for swimming, I am a member at the Chester YMCA.  The YMCA or American Family that Judi recommended are the one two in the Chester area. ACAC fitness has a 50M pool, but is a 20/30 min drive from Chester. PM me if you want to get together!

Thanks for all of the great info guys!  Matt, I'll hit you up once I get down there and settled.

What about open water swims?  I'm doing an Oly relay in September and I'd like to get a few OWS's before then in.

Hey,
I'm in Chesterfield and there is a TON of great riding out this way. Pocahontas has GREAT running and MTB trails. I have done alot of riding in Chesterfield and Powhattan counties - you can ride 30 miles and hardly see a dozen cars. BEAUTIFUL country out my way. My wife works in Chester and her commute is about 20 minutes, so it's not bad if you want to come out my way. Don't worry, I don't play the banjo and won't comment on purdy lips...

I usually swim in the James River.  There are a few areas that are good for that.  Huguenot Flats (I think) is the place I've gone most often.

I was there last weekend with the kiddos. I was in a kayak, though. Do you go under the bridge? West of the bridge gets pretty rocky...

Richmond Tri Club does an open water swim in the James (off Cherokee Rd.) every other Friday night. The next one is on the 29th at 6pm.  They have more info on their website: http://www.richmondtriclub.com/

I don't go under the bridge.  I usually swim across the river, or in a loop towards the bridge and then coming back.  Sometimes the current is too strong to make it back if you go too far down the river.

I do go to that also.  However, you have to be a member of the tri club to go because of liability.

Strostertag: you could always join the tri club! It's only $20 or so...

  • The James River Park System, hands down! Best trails in the area, but make sure you pick up a map first.  Lots of riding groups in Richmond...check out RABA's website, www.raba.org
  • Not sure about pools for daily rates, but the locals Y's have great master swim clinics, as well as lap lanes that are always open.
