First time ever attempted and I did it!  (Also my first 50 mile ride!)  Went up it in 7 minutes at 6 mph, then back down in 1 minute at 38 mph!!!!

Good stuff. Congrats!!! I remember my first time. Thankfully it has gotten easier.

First 50miler. That is quite an accomplishment too. Putting them both together in one ride is awesome.

It is in Wake County at the northern part of Lake Jordan on Lystra road off of Farrington Road.  See my logs for the mapped route

Lystra is a b*+ch.  I made it up a couple of weeks ago, but not without some embarrassingly loud grunting and a little profanity.

I looked at tahrens logs and figured out where it was and mapped it out, see pic below. Note that I flipped the elevation profile so it aligned with the mapped out path. I know where my next bike ride will be!!! I seek out bad hills to make me stronger.

Tracy - thanks for sharing this! I drive on this road every time I go swimming at the lake, but never went beyond Jack Bennett Rd, so never knew this hill existed!

Jack Bennett has a pretty good hill going up to 15-501 as well.  You can go up Jack Bennett, hang a right on 15-501, and head back down Lystra.  If  you're looking to do hill work, you could just keep doing that loop and change directions to mix it up.

How does that compare to the hill on highway 42 that is part of the Duke Half?

I may add that to my ride this week as I'm supposed to do 5 times 5 minute hills.

This isn't the exact same route as the Duke HIM, but it is a training loop my group uses on Hwy 42.  I'm pretty sure it covers the same hill as on the race. You can compare the elevation graphs.  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=52466

In reference to the hill on 42 versus Col de Lystra, I hit 45.7 on the 42 hill riding the Duke route.  I hit 48.7 mph on Col de Lystra heading back towards Farrington during the Cup and Cone tour.  I would say climbing Lystra is considerably harder than that climb up 42, especially as you have a lot of momentum coming into the 42 climb.  I can hold 13-15 up 42, but could only eke out 9-10 up Lystra (on my Felt, 53/39-11/23).  I felt as though walking would be faster the last time I went up Lystra

Congrats to the OP on conquering Lystra!  And on the half-century!

We're practically next-door neighbors!!  I'm in Cameron Park, just up the hill from you.  My primary training partner lives in L'Hermitage (one of 2 occupied homes in there...)  We ride lots out in this area.  Maybe we can hook up for some rides.  I'm on a blue S32, and run a lot on the Peakway/ATT.

WOW - you're an awesome biker! Both of those paces sound fast to me.

Holy smokes! I'm right there too, in Ashley Downs just west of tahrens 'hood.

Look for me on my black kestrel.

And for tahrens, we're walking distance away for KU watch parties!

Anyone interested in meeting up this week for a "BT get to know you" ride? We could meet at Olive Chapel Elementary school and go out from there.

Fatmouse, that is too funny you ride a Kestrel. One of my riding partners rides a Kestrel and thought he had the only one in the area.  But come to think of it, he has commented that he's seen one other on the road, that must have been you!!!

Would love to soon, but this weekend I'm doing Blue Ridge Brutal 100, so I've got some commitments...that said, I am hoping to do a 60-miler tomorrow afternoon, leaving home around 4:15pm, if anyone's interested in joining.  It's basically the Duke half course.

This week is not good for me except Thursday morning. The plan right now is to do a 2:10 hour run from the 'hood, down to the tobacco trail and turn back at 1:05.

I'll also be in the mountains this weekend. Unfortunately, its for work and not for fun.

Next week is more open, with a lot more on the training plan.

I can't believe you know someone in L'hermitage. What a shame for the folks that put deposits on the townhouses and can't get in them.

How about next Saturday the 23rd in the A.M.?  We can meet at Olive Chapel Elementary school.  And bring the people you usually ride with. It would be nice to meet the fellow cyclist in the area.  Any takers?

My sons have soccer games at 8:15 and 9:45 am on Saturday the 23rd so I'll either need to ride in the late morning/afternoon or on Sunday that weekend. With soccer starting up, my schedule is usually long runs on Saturday and long rides on Sunday.  I know everybody has their own commitments so whatever works best for the group is understandable.

I did Lystra this weekend, and a whole lot of other hills. Here's the route I took:

http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=19433

The route starts at my swimming hole. Actually rode my bike from home to the lake first! It was a fantastic ride! Rode over two tall bridges that spanned the Haw river.

PS: I had to divert up White Cross to 54 to find water! The gas station at White Cross and 54 was closed on Sunday, so I had to ride south another 1/2 mile, and phew, there was an Exxon that was open. I learned that Saturday is a much better day for finding water on my rides. There's also a gas station at 15-501 and Andrews Store rd, near the end of the ride. And one at the corner of Lystra and Farrington. (FYI-Just in case anyone wants to explore these places.)

I might be able to do this. The training plan calls for a 2:45 ride, which would be roughly the Duke half course without going into Shearon Harris; and taking the turn before getting onto 64 (I never ride 64 except on race day).

What time do you normally start?

How about 8 a.m.?  That gives us time for the babysitter to get to our house and this way my husband and I can ride together.

Sounds good. I'll plan to be at Olive Chapel elementary at 8 on Saturday. It doesn't look like the tropical storm will be hitting us anytime soon.
