A possible concern was brought to my attention today by someone who works near the CDM swim area. There are a large amount of transient boaters who moor their boats just outside the swim area. Many of those boats have people residing on the boats. A large amount of those boats NEVER move from their mooring. So, where are they dumping their waste??

There is a concern by the folks who work in the area that the transient residence are simply dumping where they are and are not using the appropriate pumping sites.

The city apparently doesn not have an ordinace to prohibit the long term moorings so there's not much the County's Harbor Patrol can do.

There may not be an issued at all. But from someone who is there every day and never sees those boats move there was some concern about waste.

My concern is the bacteria level may be unhealthy. I don't know who you can call to test the water but I thought I would let you know.

Just an FYI.

Thanks, I just swam there today, and there was one small area that smelled like sewage.

Rest seemed okay. I was wondering about the boats.

Great...

I should let Rob now.  (Omega).  He already hates that I talk about sharks.  Now he will hate that I talk about sharts!  (I love play on words).

Also, the lifeguards at CDM are county employed and are notoriously the worst in So Cal. Just another FYI

Surfrider Foundation does water quality testing at many local beaches on a daily basis and I can assume CDM is tested regularly as well with its proximity to the channel. Unfortunately though there may be some areas around those moored boats where counts could be much higher; its not too difficult to stay a distance away and I too have wondered where they dumped thier waste. As for the lifeguards, you probably don't want to have to rely on them to save you.......

Isn't CDM a state beach???

I did check a couple of Water Quality Sites and there have been no warnings or reported illnesses for the area.

Although I suspect that they are looking for general beach contamination and a small "Slick" caused by some dope pumping out his head probably won't register.

I wonder how this is handled in other areas like this. (Santa Barbara for example)

You should also let him know about the brownish smelly foam that keeps washing up on the L.A. beaches. Played in it this morning. Yum.

Yes, CDM is a state beach.  And last I knew, the Newport Harbor Patrol CAN go out and police the area, especially around the lines off of Big Corona.  I know ... I got a ticket there when I was 15, screwing around in a small Boston Whaler! Of course, that was 22 years ago, so who knows ...
