My wife will be thrilled I'm asking about this.

I plan to be out in the desert sun for a LONG time during my event and I sweat gallons.

Sun protection methods...Please share....

Xterra 8 hour water/sweatproof before the race

Then whatever they have the volunteers lathering in T2.

It has also been advised that it helps to put some on before you go to bed the night before and it then is more soaked in. Don't know that it works but I did it at Vineman and it worked on a 97 degree day.

JeepFleeb - 2008-08-13 3:55 PM Sunscreen.

revolutionary concept...

So an application before the swim and I'm good for the day, huh?

OK, if I need to elaborate...  Silverman has "sunscreen applicators" that will apply after the swim.  MAN I hope I get some hottie to rub all over me....

Is that good for a 6-7 hour bike and then 4-5 hour run?  Do you apply again when you get your SN bag?  I assume I will put more on in T2 for sure.

My wife suggested some sunscreen "wetnaps" kind of thing she has and I can keep them in my bento box.  (she is sunscreen obsessed)  That sounds like a bad idea to me though.

I agree I stick sunscreen in T-1 Bag S/N Bike bag and T-2 bag. I also agree with your wife. Some reputable companies  (Bullfrog included) make handwipes that are real convenient. Coppertone Sport SPF 50 is an excellent product. Apply as needed due to sweat swimming or duration. Just be careful of your forehead because even the most gentle sunscreen burns when it mixes with sweat and rolls into your eyes. Wear a hat.

If you have others do it, don't forget the strip btween tri shorts and top that's exposed when you're in aero (assuming two piece).  I've seen some wicked burns there....

Don't take offense if I don't tell her that!  That's all she needs, more support.  She allready nags like a mom any time I even THINK about going out side.  "Getting the mail, babe?  put some sun screen on..."

I keep a small tube of 30 SPF in both my bento box and fuel belt. It's saved me multiple times.

I don't mess with sunscreen, but you probably don't want to lather up with the stuff right before you get body-marked.

DrLeah - 2008-08-14 11:48 AM I'm loving the Coppertone continuous spray product right now.  Really easy & quick to apply, nice even coverage and you can spray over  your numbers and because you don't rub it in, they don't smudge.  Dries quick.  I plan to have 1 can in each transition bag to apply before bike and reapply before run.

I love this stuff as well.  Easy to apply, you don't have to rub it in so you don't get it all over your hands which are then sticky on the bike or your nutrition starts tasting like sunscreen to.

And now I'm back to lurking since I'm nowhere near an IM right now.  One day, one day...

I put the lotion on at home before the race.

Then I put the spray sunscreen on in T1 and T2.

For my IM I have a very small bottle of spray sunscreen I will carry on the bike. I will put it on probably 1/2 way through.

I also carry a sunscreen stick in my back pocket. I am skilled and reapplying it to my face and shoulders while riding.

Bring a bottle of the spray stuff with you, or put a bottle in your special needs bag(s) and/or T1/2 bags, depending on how much you think you might burn. Including putting some one before the race that's up to 5 applications, so I think you should be fine.

My husband has trouble with this concept too!  While doing gulf coast, he ended up burning himself pretty badly when the sun finally came out (blisters).  Beacuse this was not his first time he did this they sympathy factor was pretty much not happening. So now he has a new routine.

He applies the thickest baby sunscreen he can, but he also uses DeSoto arm coolers.  They are white (much like his skin) and are suppose to block out 75% of uv rays.  Take a look at their products, he has been pretty happy with them. (He has not had a bad burn like that again)!

I use bananaboat sport spf 50 before my long rides (up 112) and one app in the morning BEFORE the bike keeps me sun-free for the bike.  I am very fair skinned.

I put on sunscreen when I am getting dressed and half an hour before the start. I spray down at t1(spf 50, no rub), use a sunscreen stick (neutragena) on my face while riding, spray down at t2 and put on a hat. It sounds excessive, but I burn really easily and have a high skin cancer risk.

I forgot to mention that so far I have only done sprints.

I know, excessive.
