I give you ... the Olympics. MRS2Tony is all aflutter over the Olympics and even knows some of the athletes names. My gay friends all act like they know everything about sports and all talk about how they swam for two semesters in 8th grade so they're experts on the breaststroke. I assure them they're not.

These are poeple who have no inkling whatsoever at anytime EVER about rules, players, etc. etc. yet the Olympics come on and suddenly they know everything and can tell me every little nuance of an uneven bar routine or how to properly freestyle.

I don't get it.

That is exactly it.  A lot of the sports are individual.  A lot of little girls took gymnastics, and most of us have been in a pool at some point or played beer league softball.  With the exception of golf and tennis all of the major publicity sports during the rest of the time are true team sports.  If it was all dressage or shooting or field hockey we wouldn't hear so much about it.  This gives the ordinary person some type of perspective into just how phenomenal these athletes are.

Most people have no desire to be part of the jock culture that surrounds sports away from the olympics.  Or what they think it is anyway.

That's why I only watch swimming and gymnastics. And I am not an expert at either of those. In fact, I've never done gymnastics, but as far as the artistry is concerned, I  have an appreciation for it. given my dance background. Swimming, I've always  followed because my sister swam competitively for many years and I've been to meets and I know enough about the sport to watch it without feeling like a total idiot. But that's it. I will keep the other stuff on as background noise but I could care less about who wins and why.

My wife still wants to know why the women's beach volleyball players wear small bikinis but the men's beach volleyball players wear baggy shorts and tank tops.  She claims it's not fair.

We all feel that way It's been extensively analyzed over on the Olympics forum.

It's OH SO fair.

And FYI, when I say `my gay friends' I'm not trying to offend anybody, but I hung out with a group last night, two of whom are gay, and the two gay friends who hate sports normally wouldn't shut up about `GO SASHA!' and `Did you see how he hesitated at the pinnacle of his loop -- oh that's a TOTAL deduction.' Dudes.

There are many sports I am not familiar with or know nothing about yet I am watching it. The Olympics gather the best athletes in the world and that's appealing to me. Does that make me an expert or will I watch any of those sports again? most likely no, at least not for another 4 years but I don't care. It is very entertaing and even exciting, I've been going to bed very late cuz every night there is one sport that keeps me awake!

Lately the pool I swim at is been packed with people who obviously are not regulars or swimmers. I think it is the Oly/Phelps effect and while many of those swimming today probably wont do it again all year long maybe a few will stick to it and I think it is cool

All I know about gymnastics is whether or not they "stick the landing."

I'm such a poseur.  I'll watch and the guy nails the landing, and I'll say, "Wow, he really stuck that landing."  And inside, I'm so like, "sheesh, I have no idea wtf I am talking about."

Don't forget how much trajectory they were off and weren't parallel together, etc. on the "synchronized diving".  WTF?  When did "synchronized diving" become an Olympic sport?  Seriously!  What's next, synchronized 400 meter dash or synchronized 100 meter butterfly?

Because people need an excuse to be glued to the TV set for 2 weeks and not be considered as sloths. We are immersing ourselves in the Olympic fever.

I pretend I'm the female announcer from synchronized diving.  I compliment every moment and include a "but..."

as for gymnastics, my guess is that the judges don't even know how to score it - I envision them tossing special dice and occasionally accidentally getting Yahtzee

Just about every sport that needs to be judged I don't understand.  Diving in paticular...some dives seem really good to me and the announcers wince.  Yet, I watch none the less.  Like Jorge, I just like to see the best in world compete.

I think people who don't normally watch are watching because it only happens once every four years. And it's a multitude of sports, not like one sport having it's final competition every year.

Plus the announcers are doing a good job of educating the dumb viewer. I noticed last night they explained a ba-jillion times the gymnastics scoring system - how they begin with a start value, then the have 10 points that can be deducted. Add the two together and that's your final score. Now I know!

I found myself doing the same thing during diving last night.

"Did you see how he came out of his pike too early causing him to under-rotate and cause that splash because he didn't hit vertical?"

It's because the womens professional tour makes them wear the small ones.  Better ratings.  Seriously.  I assume they wear them at the Olympics because they are use to it.

AND...I don't mind or think it's unfair at all.

Ha!  So true!  I also noticed a markedly large increase in the "peleton" of the local bike shop group rides after the Tour....

I have said this before, I just love SPORT.  Even if I don't know what they are about.  I got caught up in the Scott games (throwing some big pole) or using a big pole to get across a river....

I wasted half a night when I turned on ESPN and saw Hurling (Irish game).  Odd, but they run around swinging big clubs and have no pads - GOT to be a good game!!!!!!

Tell her they do it because they make 5x the amount of money that way. It is the difference between making a very nice living as a minicelebrity or sleeping in your car and eating raw potatoes between tournaments.
