Subject: Numb toes

So I've noticed latey that  when I go for a long ride, my pinky and next toe in go numb around mile 17 or so.  My shoes fit perfectly and I've never had this problem before.  These shoes have carried me through the last 2 tri seasons without incident.

Any thoughts?  oh, another thing.  it only happens to y right foot.  And I dont have the problem when I go running either.

Have you modified your position on the bike at all?  What about your cleat?

You might need wider shoes. Even of your shoes fit perfectly when you put them on initially, feet tend to swell and expand after a while on the bike, and it may be that it is putting pressure on your outer toes after being out on the road a while. Also you may want to try a shoe insole like Superfeet or Specialized BG which helps spread the pressure out.

Trying to adjust the cleat position or shimming the cleat may help. Look at your knees and see if your right knee is moving away from the top tube during the pedal stroke. If your knee moves out this puts pressure on the outside of the foot and you either want to conciously keep you knees tucked in or make cleat adjustments to get the knee to move straight up and down.

I had this same problem...and it wasn't my shoes since they were "big" enough.  It was the cleat position.

I modified my fore-aft cleat position so that both cleats were positioned so that the ball of my foot was putting the pressure on the pedal's spindle's center...before it wasn't.

it took a few rides and a few adjustments to get it perfect, but now I can ride for 7 hours with absolutely NO toes falling asleep or any pain in my feet.   hallelujah!!

Thanks everyone for their suggestions.  I'm going to try and move my cleat placement and we'll see what happens.

 Thanks again

I had the same problem and recently posted the question. Got a couple responses and tryed moving the cleats more to the outside of the foot. I think it has helped.... haha. Haven't had the problem as bad as i used to ... but then again i need some more rides to clarify.
