Overcast
Total Time = 50m 41s
Overall Rank = 747/3168
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 115/299
Pre-race routine:

Stretch, Lemon Poppyseed Clif Bar, 20oz of GU20
Event warmup:

None to speak of
Run
  • 50m 41s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Was undertrained, so I set an easy early pace. Worked out well, but probably could have pushed harder in the first few miles, or started my kick earlier. Kept hearing about "the hill" at mile 5 that could break you if you let it. Was reserving energy for "the hill". Turned out it was only a short block long (<100 yards).
What would you do differently?:

Train better beforehand, start further forward in the pack to avoid the slow first mile, push harder in the middle, which was mostly downhill, and don't worry about "the hill"
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching, GU20, and a banana

What limited your ability to perform faster:

heavy pack at start and not enough training

Event comments:

There was a water station at every mile, except mile 3, where I'd planned to get water (Murphy's law I guess). At the 5 mile mark, at the top of "the hill", the 10k course rejoined the 5k course right where there was a water stop. This created chaos. Some cones separating the 5k from the 10k and moving the water station a few hundred feet forward would help reduce the chaos.

Course: mostly flat with a small hill at the beginning and a couple small hills right at mile 5. Lots of long, very gradual grades. At the top of the final hill, you meet back up with the 5k walkers and wind through a parking lot, which bogs down the finish

GREAT TIME!!! You were below your goal time. That's an accomplishment you should be very proud of.

Way to go!
